advice for depressed dog?

You girls gave me some great advice for helping with food ideas when my cat w/ lymphoma wouldn't eat.  Despite my best efforts he still went downhill and we put him peacefully asleep on 12/21.  i stayed home that day but went to work on 12/22, as did my husband.  Our dog stayed home alone that day.

On 12/23 we left for a trip and our dog was well stimulated and with us practically 24/7 since then.  We got home yesterday.  This morning my husband packed for a trip (the dog knows what's happening when he sees a suitcase) and I left for work.  When i came home, I smelled poop, and to my surprise he had pooped a bunch of places in the living room.  He has NEVER, in the 4 years we have had him and even when he was a puppy, pooped indoors like this.

I assume it is a result of being upset at the loss of the cat?  compounded by my husband being gone (which, he takes trips all the time and always had, and this has never happened)?  One other factor is we had our condo painted while we were gone so there is a slight paint fume, but I can't imagine that would cause him to do what he did.

I plan to run home at lunch tomorrow to check on him, but I am worried about his frame of mind.  He definitely seems down/depressed and I thought so last night before we went to bed and again this morning, but wasn't sure then if he was just tired.  Anyone have any insight and/or advice?

TIA.

Re: advice for depressed dog?

  • I would guess it's the change in his routine. A lot has happened in the past couple weeks for him. Maybe he just needs to get readjusted to his routine. Is he eating & drinking normally?

  • Unfortunately there isn't a whole lot you can do. Our female Chesapeake Bay became rather depressed after we had to put down our male. She would sleep all day and refuse to play. The best advice I can give is to give your dog plenty of love. Some extra cuddles sessions each day can work wonders. Otherwise, keep the routine the same. He will eventually return to normal. If the pooping doesn't stop, talk to your vet.
