Worries - WWYD?

Let's start with Zoey's paw pad issue: she refuses to leave any of the guaze/tape/socks we put on her. She'll leave it alone for a while, but then when she's crated and we're asleep/not home, she rips it off. I keep worrying it's going to get infected.

Further up that same leg, on the inside of her "knee" I guess (what would equate to I guess the inside of your elbow or the back of your knee), has been red/irritated. Now it's starting to look rubbed raw or like she's got an abrasion; peroxide fizzed up on it when applied. What the heck could it be?

Newest issue: see image to the right of her belly button. It looks like some sort of blister/pustule. I have no clue where it could have come from. I'm pretty sure this warrants a call/visit to the vet?

With all these little issues, I'm wondering if she' ended up with something systemic. What do you ladies think? Am I on track with a vet call? No way I want to try to mess with that bubble thing on my own (or leave it alone, in case it indicates an infection).

Ugh. So worried right now and I had to run out to work after finding that. Tongue Tied

Re: Worries - WWYD?

  • In regards to the photo - my childhood dog had something that looked like that, the vet said it was nothing to worry about, but we still took him in to have the vet look at it. It looks like it might be in the same place his was - but for sure take her in, just in case :)

About the ripping off of the sock/wrap/bandage. Dakota does the same thing. We ended up getting a no lick bitter spray and sprayed it on top of the wrap. Not enough to make the wrap wet or anything, but enough so she wouldn't want to touch it to take it off.  There's lots of different kinds out there, not sure if you're into "organic" things or not, but I do know there are some all-natural bitter sprays and what not in case you are into that kind of thing :)

The behind the knee thing sounds like a yeast infection, maybe? Dry skin or eczema?

  • Thanks for the feedback!!

In this case, was there anything you could do or had to do? Or was it just supposed to go away on its own?

I'll check at my pet store for something natural. H tried putting sriracha (*** sauce, as some call it) on the tape once, and she STILL licked it off!!

In the case of a yeast infection, what's the rememdy, other than keeping the area dry? I've applied some bacitracin ointment, but that's obviously not the way to go for any of the issues you mentioned.

Guess I should just make that call to the vet and see what they say.

  • Try Bitter Apple to get her to leave the bandage alone.  That has worked for us with several dogs.

Antibiotic cream would only make a yeast infection worse.  We've all got bacteria and yeast in balance.  When the bacteria are killed off, the yeast can flourish, and vice versa.  Like...when human women (aka me) get UTIs, we go on antibiotics.  An unfortunate side effect of this is that a yeast infection can result.  Ya dig?  Of course if it's just an abrasion (which it sounds like it is), then the antibiotics would be good.  Our Nite gets little injuries that don't look like much, then he licks them obsessively, which makes them worse.  Maybe your pup did that?

The bump doesn't really worry me.  Some dogs are bumpy.  Nite's got a cyst on his head that was drained two weeks ago but it just keeps filling back up.  I think he's going to be a bumpy old dog.

Thanks KC. Will definitely pick up the spray to put on her foot wraps tonight. The "abrasion" on her leg might even have started as an irriation from the tape we used to keep the sock on her (it's in about the right spot), and it's completely likely she kept licking/bugging it and made it worse.

The vet's office just called back and was like "oh, the bump might be a hernia!" WHA?! But then of course, they can't really say one way or the other without seeing her, and I might as well get that checked out and have her leg looked at at the same time. At least then I'll KNOW what the heck I'm dealing with on everything and can the appropriate steps.

The bump seems way too small to be a hernia. She had no umbilical hernia as a young puppy, and I have no idea what causes a hernia or how she'd have one, now, or how big they are, my brain is just telling me that doesn't seem likely.

In any case, they don't have anything available until tomorrow night (H can't get out of work earlier tomorrow to take her in the afternoon), so I'm going to be stuck flailing my arms uselessly for the next 36 hours or something.

  • That doesn't look like a hernia to me at all. My recommendations are to ecollar him or get a basket muzzle to wear when you can't be watching him. The muzzle would probably be more comfortable. Poor guy! I hate lumps when you dont know what they ares

While I tend to agree that it doesn't look anything like a hernia (and doesn't seem to fit the typical hernias I was reading about online), I'll definitely rest easier getting it checked out tomorrow night (good lord, I wish I didn't have to wait so long!).

I'm going to try some bitter spray before resorting to the cone of shame...she completely wigs out going into her crate when wearing that thing (we just experienced it 2 months ago when she got spayed). I'd prefer to stay away from any sort of muzzle; I can't even imagine how she'd feel with THAT on her face.
