Have you been to Morocco? come in please :)

Afternoon ladies! So I should probably post this on the travel board, but I feel like alot of us have done more quick weekend travels than that board.

DH and I are thinking of a 3 day long weekend in February. Morocco seems to have made it to the top of the list right now. Wavering between Casablance and Marrakesh - thoughts, opinions, suggestions, ideas???

TIA!

Re: Have you been to Morocco? come in please :)

  • We honeymooned in Marrakesh, so I can't speak to Casablanca but we really enjoyed it. I wish we had stayed at a riyad (sp?) instead of a bigger hotel but that is probably my only complaint. I would say 3 days is probably enough to see the city. We did a day trip to the mountains and spent 1 day by the pool and we were there 6 days total.

  • Thanks fr! What exactly is a riyad? Do you have any restaurant recommendations or places you think are a must see and a can miss?
  • We did a long weekend in Marrakech, so I can only speak to that city. We stayed in the Medina (the old city) in a Riad called Riad Alma. I highly recommend it. I found that I could only do a few hours in the hustle and bustle of the city before needing to retreat for a bit. This was like a little oasis.

The other thing we did that I loved, and tell everyone who goes about, is take a cooking lesson there. We took them through La Maison Arabe, and we still make the recipes we learned there. In fact, we bought a tagine soon after!

Other tips I'm sure you'll see in the guide books. The orange juice at main market, Jamaa el Fna is to die for and safer to drink than the water.

People always want to "help you" get to where you're going, but they just want money. Say no and walk away.

A riad is like a guest house or a B&B instead of large hotel. The one I stayed in had more of the feel of a boutique hotel.

  • I was in college when I went, so I have no fancy advice (I did everything super cheaply), but just wanted to say that I went in late February and the weather was perfect that time of year.

  • Thanks for the advice Rpic - will definitely look into the Riad. And we love to cook and didn't even think about a cooking lesson!

Anna - very good to know about the weather :)

VABeach, yes, would love a review when you get back. Have fun!

  • Hi!  I don't usually post on this board but I lurk here a bit.  I feel like one "of you" at heart but I'm live in the US.

Anyway, I spent a month in Morocco last summer.  Morocco is an amazing place but Casablanca is just a big, yucky city.  It's not where you want to spend 3 days.  I would definitely choose Marrakech over Casa.  You could wander in Djema al Fna alone for 3 days.  Yes, get the orange juice!  Grab a guide book and you can figure out exactly what you want to see/do, but it's a really great place to have no itinerary.  I also agree with taking a cooking class - I so wanted to do that but they don't offer them in the summer b/c it's too hot.  A riad would be a great place to stay.

If ever you go for longer, I recommend going into the Erg Chebbi and doing the overnight camel tour.  It's totally a tourist thing, but when you're out in the middle of the Sahara with nothing but sand (and the rest of your camel-riding tourist group) in sight, it's truly amazing.

    Have fun!

  • Thanks Cyprus! We have def chosen Marakkesh to Casablanca so glad to see you agree! Now to finalize the details this weekend!
