Talk to me about snowboarding.
I have never done it; and I think I'm more afraid of the "fear" itself, then the actual sport.
Any pointers? Advice?
My H Loves the sport, and I want to at least try it. I plan on taking a lesson (not w/ my H, but with an instructor), and then go from there.
Re: Snowboarding
You're doing the right thing by taking a lesson - without your H! Both my husband and I ski, but he learned long before I did (I learned when I was 27, he learned when he was 7!).
What helped me was I did a day of lessons and then when I got comfortable with the basics, I did some runs on the greens (the easy ones). When I felt comfortable with that by myself, only then, did I do a run with my husband.
But even then, now that I'm a LOT more comfortable, I still ski separately with my husband since he likes to go faster than I do. One thing to remember is that when you're going down, you actually DO want to go a bit faster - slower skiers (and boarders) are a little more of a threat because they can't react as quickly either. And a lot of the time, they tend to traverse (go side to side) down the trail than straight down, and that's dangerous too.
I agree! Take a lesson! I am actually just learning how to snowboard. I have been out twice. Once last year, and once this year. I am actually going again tonight! I admit it is a challenge. But it's really fun and something that I want to get better at. I liked it so much after my first time that I bought my own equipment. It costs so much to rent and if you go at the end of the season a lot of places have 50% off deals.
I totally agree to take a lesson, or two, or three if you need it.
Honestly, and I don't mean to scare you, I promise, but I've never been as bruised and sore as I was the day after I first went snowboarding. It was really hard and I fell so many times, but it was soooo much fun! I just kept trying and now I absolutely love it. I'm still not great at it (mainly b/c I only get to go a couple times a year) but I'm comfortable on some blue runs now. I don't think I've gone skiing since I first took up snowboarding 4 years ago (I learned to ski in the 7th grade).
I have my own equipment now, which makes it nice as well.
