Jags interviewing head coach contenders

On the first day it could officially begin, the Jaguars were aggressive with their coaching search.

The Jaguars requested and received permission to interview five NFL offensive coordinators on Monday ? Atlanta?s Mike Mularkey, the New York Jets? Brian Schottenheimer, Carolina?s Rob Chudzinski, sources confirmed. ESPN also reported the Jaguars will interview Denver?s Mike McCoy and New England?s Bill O?Brien.

Interim head coach Mel Tucker is the only coach with a defensive background in line to interview so far.

The interviews will begin as early as this week.

Mularkey had interviews last season with the Cleveland Browns and Tennessee Titans. He declined an interview with the Denver Broncos, avoiding the distraction during the playoffs. Mularkey?s experience developing Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan is one thing that makes him intriguing to the Jaguars. Mularkey?s son, Patrick, is also in the Jaguars scouting department.

Mike Mularkey is expected to get at least one more head coaching interview this year, according to a league source. He was in play in 2003 when the Jaguars hired Jack Del Rio. He was hired by the Buffalo Bills in 2004 and was 14-18 in two seasons before resigning in 2006.

Schottenheimer was a quarterbacks coach in San Diego with Drew Brees from 2002 to 2005. He began his career in St. Louis. His offense has been maligned this season as Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez has struggled.

Questions about his job security surfaced, but in his season-ending news conference, Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum told reporters he expected Schottenheimer back with the team next year.

Chudzinski coached No. 1 overall pick Cam Newton this season, and O?Brien has been instrumental in a changing Patriots offense.

Teams are required to allow assistant coaches under contract to interview for head coaching jobs, so the requests for permission are just a formality. There are varied rules about when coaches in the playoffs can interview.

Chudzinski and Schottenheimer will be available immediately because the Panthers and Jets are not in the playoffs.

The Falcons and Broncos are both playing during Wild Card weekend, which means the Jaguars cannot interview Mularkey or McCoy until after their games this weekend.

If their teams win, the Jaguars will have a window beginning after that game and ending with the divisional playoff games to interview them.

O?Brien can have a first interview through the end of the Wild Card games, which conclude on Sunday.

Complicating the Jaguars situation is the change in ownership which will officially close on Wednesday, when Shahid Khan will take over the franchise. He intends to be a significant part of the Jaguars? coaching search, and will sit in on interviews.

Khan said in his introductory news conference last month that he believed the NFL was a passing league, which indicated offense would be a priority as the Jaguars. It?s possible that if the Jaguars do not hire Tucker as their permanent head coach, they will try to keep him as defensive coordinator.

Tucker could be in the mix for several defensive coordinator jobs this offseason. When he took over playcalling duties from former head coach Jack Del Rio this season, he helped turn the Jaguars defense from the league?s 28th-ranked defense to No. 6.

Big-name coaches like Bill Cowher, Jon Gruden and Jeff Fisher aren?t likely to be in play for the Jaguars. Fisher is scheduled to interview with the Miami Dolphins.

    From me on 11/29/11:

I would be ecstatic about Jeff Fisher. If nothing else, the Jags need names that people recognize. Period. They're a bunch of nobodys right now and names would sell tickets IMO.

    LOL. *sigh*

  • lol. It's painful. Their track record and lack of support (and probably worry that the team could be sold after the change in ownership) are both the reasons why a big name would be so nice, AND the reason why big names probably wouldn't consider them. It's unfortunate.

  • It would be nice, but what the Jags really need are players that are good and are dedicated. We could have xyz as a coach, but if you don't have receivers, blockers or a QB then what is the point? All we have is MJD, can we really survive off of that? I agree that we need to develop a passing game. I need Gabbert to toss it down the field. I need for him to have confidence. I really need for the offensive linemen to cover for the QB so that he can have time to look down the field. Lawd knows that he needs all the time he can get.

  • You really think that the way a team plays is based more on the players than the way they work together? And wouldn't leadership and good cooperation encourage dedication among players? I think this team with no lineup changes whatsoever could still do a LOT better in the hands of a good coach.

I think that it goes hand in hand. When everyone on the team does their part, then the team as a whole will succeed. I am sorry, but the greatest coach in the world can tell the players what to do, but if the player does not make changes, listen to what is being said, and execute then they are going to be the same as they always were. We have all seen when leadership changes, whether it is the coach or a QB, that the team is excited and plays different for a while, but then just goes back to their mediocre ways.
