Need advice on rescuing a dog

I was coming home today and saw a little Dachshund running across the street in rush hour traffic. It's a pretty busy intersection most of the time anyway, so I turned around immediately and pulled into a service station it was at. I got out and tried to get it to come to me. It almost did, but got spooked and took off across the street. I tried to follow it, but I lost it.

My husband is coming home soon and he offered to go back out and look for it with me. It didn't have a collar and looked a little on the thin side.

My question is if we find out, what's the best way of coaxing it to us? I assume treats, but is there anything else I can do?

  • The stinkiest treats you have. Or a can of tuna.

If you have a slip collar, that will probably work better than a clip-on collar, if the little guy is scared.

If you don't have a slip lead, you can also use a regular dog leash, looping the clipping-end through the handle loop as a makeshift slip lead.

This works well, we've had to do it a few times when our dog's collars haven't been tight enough (or fault) and they pulled out of their collar outside.

And definitely the stinkiest dog treats/food or pet friendly food you can find! Keep calm and a calm voice so not to spook him and if you can try and coax him to a quieter area, not near the road etc.

  • We usE cat food, even for dogs, and a slip lead.  Good luck!
