I think you said you had a Mazda3.  Just wondering if you had a carseat in there and if you had it in the middle or side...and how a passenger would fit.  I'm worried I won't be able to have people in the car with me with the car seat!

Re: *lindsayB*

  • We have a Graco carseat - I'm not sure what version it is because it's my sisters, we didn't buy it new.  It can go on the passenger side if the front seat is moved quite a bit forward.  We had it in the middle.  But even then the passenger seat had to be quite a bit further forward than I would have liked it and it also had to be totally un-reclined.  The drivers seat also had to be a bit farther forward than I had it previously, but nothing major.  It was fine for the driver, manageable for the passenger but I wouldn't want to be the passenger travelling any sort of distance.

It was also a huge PITA to get into the middle because we had the seats back as far as they could go, so we had to already have the carseat handle down before we clicked it into the base.

Hence, why we bought a new vehicle :)

That being said, I think you can get smaller carseats.  I also heard you can get certain carseats where the handle does not need to be reclined, which will free up a little more space as well.

I'm 5' 7'' for reference, DH is just slightly taller than me.

  • Thanks!  I'm 5'2, so I should be okay with the middle.  I'll have to test it out with DH in the passenger side though.

    Thanks for the insight!

  • FWIW, T has a Mazda 3 and I was worried about this too. I've heard the Chicco Keyfit carseats are a little smaller and the handle can still be up when in the car. We plan to test out the Chicco and Graco in both cars before we decide on one. We're also both pretty short though (me 5'5" and him 5'6"), so I'm hoping it's not a huge issue.

  • We tried my sisters Graco 35 Infant car seat in our car... we also have a Mazda 3. It fit but the seats have to go forward. In the end we decided to go with the Graco 30 since it is slightly smaller in length as well. We should be getting it tomorrow so we'll see how it fits!
