I turned on the TV tonight and came across National Geographic LA Gang Wars and lo and behold... I was watching the neighborhood where I teach. I teach in Watts, South Central LA... Compton/Watts... and before I started teaching here, I had an idea of what the area is like but it's so close to home now... these are my babies... I love these kids and never thought I really would... most of them I don't even blame... it's survival for them. Either you participate in the gang activity or you get hurt... it's so sad... anyway, thought I'd share the neighborhood where I teach. Most of my actual students are not gang bangers but almost all are related to some and all of them live in major gang territory.

If you pause the clip above around .11-.12 seconds, it shows a map of south central la gangs (well, just the Crips... doesn't show the Latino or neighborhood gangs). The school where I teach is between the 104th st Crips and Avalon Crips

Anyway, this is a social issue that is hard to believe... what's the answer? How do we fix it? Do we just withdraw and let it explode? How do we fix children being given gangs and hatred, teenagers murdering and being murdered?
Re: LA Gang Wars - Discussion
Isn't that the million dollar question?
I think it's scary to go out sometimes when you see members of an apparent gang. Look at them the wrong way, and they think you have a grudge against them
I think that there needs to be a break in the chain somewhere and sometime. Keep doing all of your awesomeness at school, dearie!
Where I live is nothing like Watts, etc, but I will admit that even in the past couple of years out here we're also experiencing a rise in gang activity. Stinks.
