Flea ?

H and I are going house hunting this Saturday and MIL offered to watch the dogs.  We had left Max with her a couple years ago in September while we went on vacation and he came home with fleas.  She lives in the city and she says a lot of stray cats run through her yard

My question is, are fleas prevalant right now (it's 20 degrees here during the daytime)?  Should I give them a flea treatment before they go?  Charlie is only 6 months old and I'm not sure if he's even old enough.

I don't use any kind of flea treatment usually...we kind of live in the middle of nowhere and we've never had a problem with fleas here (and I'd rather not unnecessarily put chemicals on them).  TIA!

Re: Flea ?

  • You can start flea treatments as young as 12 weeks, I think. We certainly started giving Zoey a flea preventative (Sentinel) when she was less than 6 months. They'll state right on the package "for dogs x age and older" or something along those lines.

Your best bet is to just get 1 application of a flea preventative from your vet for each dog; that way you KNOW your pups aren't going to come home with any fleas. We just found a couple on Zoey when we were at my mom's for Christmas (granted, she lives in AL, but I don't know where exactly she picked them up). If stray cats around your mom's place have fleas living on them, the cold won't matter.

Just my 2 cents; I'd rather be safe than have to deal with an infestation later, which is a LOT more work and products to get rid of!

  • Thanks, I'm going to stop and get some tonight.  I'd rather be safe than have two dogs with fleas (it was bad enough when it was only one).
