Medicine with syringe

Sorry for being a post whore with sherlock's issues but we have a lot of questions. Today's question is how do we get his medicine into him? This morning DH held him with one arm, scruffed with the other, and I attempted to administer the syringe. It took us four attempts to empty the entire thing into his mouth and I'm sure we lost about .1 cc along the way.

We need to administer this drug 2x a day for the next 7 days, so any tips to make it smoother are greatly appreciated. I gave him his pill in his wet food this morning by opening the capsule and mixing it in well. He gobbled that right up.

Re: Medicine with syringe

  • This may sound brutal but you have to do what you have to do. What we did was find a corner and back his little butt into it. Then use one hand to grab the top part of his skull and turn his nose upwards. His mouth should open and you squirt quickly towards the back of his throat and you are done. If this doesnt work you could try the towel method. Just wrap him up like a burrito with all his legs inside and then you just have to work with a head. Good luck! Aren't cats fun? Hehe

Yeah there really isn't an easy way. I always treat after giving meds. One of my cats gets a pill once a week, and she literally comes running to get her pill since she gets a treat after. She is still a PITA to give the pill to, but at least I don have to chase her. I also pretty much have to leg lock her most times so she doesn't claw my arm off.

  • Also, I find it easier to just have one person do it (me). DH is too timid, and I think I works better when I just go in there and do it. We had to give them all a de-wormer and I gave 4 of them their medicine before he finished with 1.

  • I guess it will just take practice then. Thanks for the tips! I'll give them all a shot until I find something that works well.

I've always had the best luck with the burrito-cat method

    "burrito-cat method" Lol!

We had to give S2 a pill once or twice (I don't remember) a day for about a week about 2 years ago. She would gnash her teeth so bad, she actually ended up biting me and drawing blood once! It wasn't intentional, she just HATES having anything forced into her mouth; you should see her get dewormer at the vet...half of it ends up smeared on her chin, lol.

Like PPs said, do what you need to do. I know there's a way to tilt the cat's head back far to a certain point and it acts sort of like scruffing: semi-immobilizes. I would think the best method would be burrito-cat wrapping him, then grabbing his top jaw and pulling his head back until his mouth opens, then squirting. And hopefully he's not flailing his head back and forth too much for you to get a clean shot!

  • My cat hates everything, so when he hurt his tail and we had to administer pain meds in a similar fashion, I just held him down and got the syringe in his cheek and just squirted it in.  The quicker the better and once it's in there he'll swallow it.

You'll get a groove, but as PPs have said, I think it's easier with one person.

I hope Sherlock gets better soon!

BTW, "Burrito Cat Method" made me chuckle.

  • Maybe I have really easy cats, but I usually pick them up and hold them upside down along my arm with their head in my hand (kind of pressing them up against my side for balance). I open the jaw with the thumb from the hand that is holding them and put the syringe in as far as I can before squirting a bit in. One cat, I will do about half, then let her swallow. The other, I do about a fourth because shes not as good with medicine. They dont really squirm.

With our foster cats, I sat on the floor with my legs under me (like on my knees then sat back onto my feet). I put the cat in between my legs laying on her back with her head sticking by my knees. Then I used one hand to open the jaw and the other to get the medicine in. This was helpful because they were squirmy and I was able to keep them from moving since they were kind of sandwiched in and could hold their head steady with my other hand.

I am a huge proponent of making a burrito-cat when trimming claws, but have never tried it when giving medicine. I am sure that would work too.

  • Based on my experience with Cat, you have to hide the liquids in something really stinky to get them to eat it without a fuss.  Apparently cats mostly taste by smell (something I didn't know until schooled by the vet) and if a food smells strong enough, cats will overlook a nasty flavor.

So when we needed to do liquid antibiotics, I drained a whole Sam's club size can of tuna into a tupperware.  Every time I needed to medicate him, I would use a syringe (not the meds one) to suck up an equal amount of tuna juice as the amount of medication.  Mix them together, offer it up, done.

Towards the end, I think he started getting wise to my techniques, so I doubled up the juice to meds radio to 2:1 instead of 1:1.

ETA - I'd double check with the vet that whatever med you've been prescribed is okay to mix with other things before you do this.  Just in case.

  • Good tips. I did check with her and she said it was fine as long as he's eating it, and he's definitely an eater. I've been opening up the pill capsule and emptying the powder into his wet food and mixing it well. He licked the bowl clean tonight. We did the syringe today. My mom came over and held him for me since DH was gone and I administered it. He did better with it this time but he was VERY squirmy so I'm glad I didn't have to do it alone. I'm getting better at getting it in his mouth and getting him to accept it, so maybe now that I'm a little less shy with the syringe I can attempt holding him and doing it too.

Thanks for the tips everyone! I feel like it's really intimidating at first!
