I'm hosting a "winter soup and wine" party on Saturday night - I'm serving a spicy jambalaya and a vegetarian chili. I'm just thinking - maybe I should also have appetizers?
The soups will be ready and in crock pots when people arrive. Should I do hors d'oeuvres or just settle on the soups only?
Thoughts?
Re: Appetizers with soups?
Are people going to eat as soon as they arrive or will they wait until everyone is there? I prefer not to have people walk right into the main meal so I have some nibbles out. It doesn't have to be much- a dip, veggies, cheese. Just something to move a crowd around as you wait for everyone.
Will you have bread and crackers to go with the soups? I do think that's a must.
The food board could probably give you some great ideas. Personally, I'd do two types of bread (either as aps or with the meal), cranberry salsa, veggie platter with hummus and a couple other dip options. And unless you've got a dessert in there I'd add a sweet pumpkin dip (would go with your wintery theme) with cut fruit to lighten/sweeten things up.
And maybe just throw out some seasoned nuts, cheese, etc. for nibbles as you'll probably not be able to serve RIGHT when people arrive.
Ditto.

Thinking of doing cosmetic updates to a dated home? These were our costs.
Great feedback! Yes, I'll definitely have bread, etc. for the soups. I think a dip or two would be good. Thanks!
I like to do apps depending on what's "missing" from the main dish. Your soups aren't dairy based, so a creamy app would complement them nicely. Maybe something chicken based, too.
And just throwing this out there-- if soup is 1/2 of the theme, I'd expect more than two soups. I'd think that there would be small cups available for me to have 3-4 soups.
