Important info for NL-ladies who plan to stay (longer)

I just found out at least one of the going-to-stay-in-NL-long-term ladies was misinformed about this, so I figure I'd put up this little public service announcement.

It is NOT illegal to have a garbage disposal in NL.

Some enviro/jealous people will frown upon you having one, they will say it's terribly bad for the environment/water cleaning installations etcetera. Besides the fact that I think that's nonsense (ehm, if you can't filter out food particles, how about the stuff that goes down the toilet, like soup or, ehm, body waste), it's really just their opinion, but there's NO national/european law that states that garbage disposals are forbidden.

You're welcome!

P.S. I've got one and know where you can buy them in NL or you can get a 220V version in the US and drag it over. Both works, the sizes are international standard.

***There might might might be a stipulation by your local 'waterschap', but besides the fact that they don't communicate that info, there's no such thing as sewage police and if the use might be limited by your waterschap it'd still be legal to buy one, own one, install one, just not use one, so if by some really weird change of everything suddenly the waterschap gets a warrant to enter your house and sees it, just say it was there when you started living there, but you would never ever use it.

Re: Important info for NL-ladies who plan to stay (longer)

  • Very few people have them here either.  We checked with the septic tank guy and he said that as long as its a double blade model, they are actually GOOD for the septic tank.  And they are starting to be advertised as being "green" since it will ultimately cut down on the methane gas being produced in land fills!  (yeah it might be a stretch, but I'm taking it).

My kitchen re-model will have one.

  • Oh, and where can I get a 220v in the US?  These beast are $$$$$ down here.

  • At Lowes or the Home depot or stores like that they should be able to order you a 220V model. From what I understand they're usually a little more expensive than the 110, but still might be worth it. I know my dad has bought 220's from there for Dutch people before (he was going to for me, but then suddenly there was an affordable 220 option with remote, so no drilling for the on/off switch) available in NL so he ordered it there for us.)
