P(olitics)OTB: Republican Candidates
I know there are lots of Republicans/Conservatives on this board. And I know that there is probably a good level of "anyone but Obama". Regardless, just wondering what people are thinking about the pool of potential republican nominee's.
Are you happy with the choices right now?
Who has the best chance to beat Obama?
Do any of them really line up with what you want in a President?
Other comments?
Re: P(olitics)OTB: Republican Candidates
Ron Paul is near perfection as a candidate who ascribes to my political leanings. i do not agree with his stance on abortion, but I do support his stance that taxpayer money should not be used to fund abortions.
I don't know who has the best chance to beat Obama, it is too far off.
So Tasty, So Yummy
I'm sporting a Huntsman for President sticker on my car. I'm probably the only person outside of New Hampshire and Utah doing as much but he's my guy and I can't figure out why people aren't listening to him. Maybe he just isn't conservative enough since he actually has diplomatic foreign policy experience and supports civil unions for same sex marriages. Oh also he believes in evolution.
Since his chance of winning the nomination is next to none Romney has my support as well, even though the two are very different on some issues.

I can get behind Huntsman or Paul. The others are far too loony/extremist/slimey/scary for my tastes.
My thoughts exactly.
Another Ron Paul supporter. I agree with him on most (not all) issues.
Never heard of Huntsman.
I'm not happy with the choices for the party AT ALL.
Out of the group Ron Paul is my favorite, fiscal policy, small government, etc. I don't agree with all his stances but most are in line with my political views. Sadly I don't think he has any chance at all of getting the nomination.
Even more bothersome to me is that I'm not sure any of these candidates can oust the current administration.
He has been at many of the debates, but the moderators were focusing on Romney and Perry so much he didn't get much play.
Matt Lauer asked as much this morning on the Today show. The political commentator said it is because he isn't the typical Republican candidate, doesn't have Tea Party support, and while he has issued some of the most comprehensive and freshest ideas for policy changes he hasn't made himself stand out. Not to mention he served in Obama's administration - I think the RNC hates him for that.
He was a governor in Utah and his job creation record then was top in the nation.
Oh he's also Mormon. I think there is an unspoken bigot rule that only one Mormon at a time can get any media attention. :-P

This is me with the exception that I think pretty much of any them CAN beat Obama.
I haven't watched any; we canceled our cable and never bothered getting an antenna or box thing to get local channels. So that would explain it!
Out of the choices, the only one I can get behind is Ron Paul. There is controversy over his comments regarding the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and I don't agree with his stance on abortion but besides that, he lines up pretty well with most of my beliefs.
I am not sure if any of the candidates can beat the current admin. Besides, it is equally important to make sure the house and the senate are in line with your views.
You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say will be misquoted and used against you. My Blog
If you'd like more info about him, the P&CE board has an interesting thread running right now asking about why he isn't getting more attention. The few conservatives on that board have shared their positions on why they don't like him.
Fact - Liberals can tolerate him. Many moderates who are very socially liberal love him (raises hand). Tea Partiers hate him.

If I were not voting for Obama, I would vote for Ron Paul.
I consider myself a moderate and I swing my vote with who I believe in.
I don't wear red or blue
If someone held a gun to my head and said I had to vote for one of them, I'd vote for Huntsman. He is the only relatively normal one. I agree with a lot of things Ron Paul says, but I cannot agree with his stance on abortion, and I think he is unrealistic in the degree of his isolationism.
My prediction is for a Romney/some crazy tea party favorite (Bachman or Santorum) ticket.
Perfect example of why I no longer participate in political threads. Putting a cheeky face after a name-calling comment does not make it ok to call others bigots. There are plenty of real issues to discuss regarding why Huntsman is not a viable candidate in this election cycle.
For the record, Huntsman has been interviewed on Fox news MANY times, his daughters have also been on there multiple times campaigning for him. So by bigots, you must be referring to the other news outlets. I have never seen him mentioned on MSNBC or CNN.
He has focused his campaigning very narrowly on New Hampshire, therefore the rest of us the country knows very litle about him. My feeling about him is that he really just participating in this primary to get his name out there a bit so he can run in 4 - 8 years with more success. He was the ambassador to China previously, so his name hadn't been in the public a lot over the past several years, unlike Romney who has been keeping himself public because he planned on running again this time.
