How much "research" do you do to a new SO?

I don't even know if SO is the right terms, but early on in dating, how much research do you do to their background. Back when I was dating the first time, err 10 years ago, most of the guys I dated were in the same friend circle. Now dating is a bit different, and so most of my dates are not in my friend circle (as most of my friends are married). Once you decide you like a guy and want to pursue something, how much do you look into them? Like at what point do you think it's reasonable and at what point is it stalkerish? Do you google them, talk to other people who know them etc? I realize this is a weird question, just curious.

Re: How much "research" do you do to a new SO?

  • I have a folder that I keep in my car full of my standard background check release forms. If the first or second date goes well enough I have him fill it out so I can check him out as thoroughly as possible before pursuing a relationship.

No, I am not serious. I don't even google people.

  • I've been known to google stalk people.  When I met XH I knew a ton about him before we even had our first date.  He had told me his first name and which firm he worked at so it was easy to go from there.  Unfortunately, no matter how much I googled, I wasn't able to learn everything (nor did dating or marrying him give me the info I needed for that matter).

I guess it depends on the situation.  I like to google dates to make sure they're not some psycho with a criminal record or married.  I also google their screen names to see other sites that they have been on.  Someone who is on Ashley Madison or Adult Friend Finder isn't someone I'd be interested in dating.

I think it's stalkerish when you zillow their house to find out the value, google map it to see what it looks like, and go through every facebook pic before you're FB friends.  Reading up some basic info on them is ok to me.

  • I don't really "research" anyone. But I protect myself until I feel like I do know them better (don't hand out my address, always meet in public places, etc.).

I do Google sometimes, but it usually just brings up a Facebook page/LinkedIn and occasionally their workplace. When I Googled The Artist, I found his professional website.

  • I Google or use Spokeo. I don't pay for information but I want to know that if they say they lived somewhere and such and such I can get a general idea of if they were lying.

I also have a really good memory so if things did not add up or they said things that conflicted I stopped communication. I like to believe them but I guess It takes me a long time to blindly trust. I also use my intuition.

I had one guy I was talking to that said he was a principal of a middle school. He misspelled bored. (board) in his first email. I thought well??? In his second email he talked about his staff swearing at kids, and all the gossip they did. I did not  talk with him after that. I thought if he was a principal he should know how to spell and he should not be offering up gossipy information to me.  Red Flags??? to me yes.

Yeah, I had someone tell me they were an attorney and then have terrible grammar and spelling.  Red flags to me too!

This...totally. I google basic info and it's always checked out. I think it's really only the safe thing to do, espeically if you're online dating. But that's the brother is a Sheriff/2 cousins in the FBI/uncle former military police in me. Heck, even my lawyer offered to do a background check on them at any time.  I'd rather error on the side of caution and if I can't google you? I find that odd. Eveyone is google-able these days, especially those with some type of professional careers which are pretty much the people I date (call me a snob, but it's important to me). Do I stalk them and track down their high school, former residences, etc.? No.

I check property appraiser & clerk of courts for the region I live. When I was in college, I was dating a nice guy who was finishing up his MBA.. totally gorgeous.. Until I checked Clerk of Courts & found out he had 5 DUIs & had been to prison.

Ha! I once dated a guy who said he was a successful computer programmer (working with major companies) and the next date he asked to borrow money to pay his cell phone bill! Hmm

  • I definitely google/Facebook/Linkedin stalked guys I had just met, just to make sure what I found was in line with what they told me. My sister is a realtor so if I wanted to confirm home ownership or something I could do that too, but I never have.

  • Yeah, I google stalk, but that's about it. Xh hid some majorly shady stuff from me, stuff I felt I should have discivered, so I'm a bit apprehensive. The clerk of courts thing...hmm :-)

Bahaha!  The new dude I'm hanging out with is a major IT pro.  He get alerts when people google him so I'm resisting the urge.  I wonder if he hacked my phone when I went to the bathroom on our date and left it on the bar.  Hmm...  ::waves to new dude::

I need to learn how to do this.  For serious.

  • The only thing that I do is Google them and look on their county's court system to determine if they have a criminal record or like a wife and kids that they aren't telling me about. I don't know if that is too much or too little, but I have kids and need to make sure that I'm bringing a criminal and a liar into my house.

  • Hmmm. What if this was not possible and he just told you that so you wouldn't find stuff out! LOL I totally wouldn't know the difference! I'd be at the local library checking out of sheer curiosity! Ha.
  • I dated a guy where things just werent adding up. I googled him and found that he had some connections to some pretty trashy girls. Of course he had an excuse which sounded a lot more crazy than just admitting he was hooking up with them.

  • I google them. I'm not that much of a stalker.

You can find out the number of people searching for a particular term, but not who is searching right?  Not that I'm google stalking a guy, but I own a business so things like this interest me.

  • I FB stalk and look up their criminal record at minimal. After the hell I've been through, these are prerequisites.

Yeah you can find out that someone searches for your name but not who, in particular.  But you can get the time the search was done and the location of the ISP, but as far as I know, you can't find out WHO actually searched for you...unless you hack into a specific person's computer, that is.
