Those with Budgets

What are your categories? We're trying to sit down and truly set one up this time but I am having issues figuring out the categories other then the obvious like mortgage, food, utilities, etc. I really want to get things set up to set us up for success this time.

  • Look at The Total Money Makeover Workbook, it's fantastic!

  • I e-mailed you a copy of our template.  It was based on Dave Ramsey's TMM, but I adapted it for ourselves.  Hopefully it'll help you out.

  • We just made categories for all our bills, and estimates (overestimates to be safe) things like gas (car), electric, groceries etc. We each get a set amount of personal fun money, and we have a set amount for us to do things like go out to eat etc. We just started with that bc the little things were really adding up.

I don't really make a budget for groceries, per say, but I try to keep things reasonable and looks for the best prices. I would rather compromise on other things, not what I eat.

  • I hate budgets that have a ton of lines in them.  Ours looks like this, sorted by due date - I pay all bills twice a month on the 1st and 15th.  Yes, there are 2 payments per month going to the Farm Bureau, I don't know why they did it that way and it annoys me.

    Bill Due Date
     MORTGAGE   1ST
     DAYCARE   1ST
     GYMNASTICS   1ST
     UTILITY: WATER (quarterly)   5TH
     UTILITY: ELECTRIC   5TH
     TX FARM BUREAU   10TH
     IRS (quarterly)   15TH
     UTILITY: GAS   16TH
     UTILITY: PHONE/INTERNET   19th
     STATE FARM   25TH
     TX FARM BUREAU   28TH
     CAR PAYMENT   28TH
     MAID
EVERYTHING ELSE  (gas, groceries, shopping, dinners out, etc)

I allow $2500 for the "everything else" category every month.  If we go over that's OK, I just try to keep it under $2500.  "Everything else" items are charged to our Visa that is paid off monthly.

  • I am pretty sure we have an extra copy of Dave's Total Money Make-over too.  If I can find it, you are welcome to it.

  • I used the budget tool that I found on thenest.com
