working out in the am

I know some of you do this.  Do you eat before you work out?  I'm trying to get in the habit.  I have been literally rolling out of bed, getting dressed and getting on the treadmill, but my stomach has been upset afterward, maybe because I'm hungry.  I really don't want to get up any earlier, so I'm not sure it's possible to eat anything beforehand.

Also, how long before I don't need to drink an entire pot of coffee before 11 am?  :)

Re: working out in the am

  • I'd get a box of clif bars or luna bars or something. You should definitely eat before working out.

  • Maybe I'll try that.  I'm worried it'll just sit in my belly since I won't have time to digest before I start.

  • Generally, I'm opposed to eating anything super early in the morning.  I set my alarm for about 20 minutes before I really have to get up, then flip on the news to kind of get me "awake".  Then I exercise.  Seems to work pretty well.

  • I work out early and I usually eat half of a bar (Luna or Lara) or sometimes almond butter on a piece of toast. I cant do eggs or I get nauseous. Sometimes a banana. Then I eat something for sure afterwards!

  • I have to eat first if I run in the morning. I usually go for a half of a bagel with peanut butter.  Protein bars are ok for me, but sometimes they feel like a brick in my stomach.
  • I usually eat a babybel cheese wheel before an AM workout.  And a glass of water.

You will get used to waking up earlier, but I will suggest that if you get up earlier everyday (and do some other around-the-house stuff or read or something on the day's you don't workout), you will adjust much faster.

  • I don't eat before I work out. I only eat before races...and at least 2 hours ahead of time.  I can't run with food in my belly.  I don't know how that's going to work when it's time for the marathon.

If I know I'm working out super early, I'll eat a little extra at dinner, or eat some toast/peanut butter before bed.

  • I don't work out in the am anymore, but when I did I didn't eat beforehand unless I had about 30 minutes to digest. It sounds like you have a treadmill at home, so if I were you I would just try to eat something like a banana as soon as you hop off the treadmill.
  • I actually get side aches if I eat before I work out so I dont.  I also get up at 4 am so Im generally not all that hungry yet!

  • I'm too tired (DD having sleep issues) to work out in the AM (or at all for that matter) right now but I looooooove to work out in the morning.  I would eat either 1/2 a bar (a small, cheap bar like the Clif Z Bars) or 1/2 a piece of toast with PB while I would stretch and warm up in the house for a minute before hitting the pavement.  I would never run for more than an hour but I could NEVER  do it on a completely empty stomach.  I tried Body for Life once and he recommends not eating before working out first thing but I couldn't handle it.  I needed something in my tummy, even 2 bites did the trick for me.  GL!!
