House Re-wiring - Electrician Rec

Has anyone ever had to re-wire a house?  If so, how long did it take?  Can you give an estimate on the cost?  Our house is old and it needs to be done.  Yuck.

Re: House Re-wiring - Electrician Rec

  •  We didn't get ours re-wired (do you have aluminum? Luckily we don't) but we did have our panel replaced and upgraded. We had some outlets replaced because they weren't grounded. It was around 4k. We used mathew's electrical. They were priced well, i think, but we had to stay on top of them.  We didn't initially pass inspection becaus of where the wire came off the house to the lines. Something they should have realized.

  • Thanks, M.  I don't know what we have.  We def need a new panel and new outlets. I appreciate the rec.

  • I don't know the cost of whole house rewiring, but we just used http://www.luiselectric.com/ to replace MIL's breaker box.  He got the work done quickly and showed up promptly for the initial inspection and again for the work.  He was referred to me by a contractor I know.  You can let him know that Sheron Chapa referred you, if you so desire.
  • D's friend you met on Monday is a master electrician.  He might be willing to take a look and give you an idea next time he's in town.  My guess is that you don't need all new wiring.  Probably just a new breaker pannel and outlets (aka MUCH less expensive).

I thought about him after I posted this.

  • Why do you think you need to rewire the whole house?  That's pretty pricey.  My house is roughly the same age as yours and I would guess has similar wiring.  M said our main panel was a "fire starter" so he had a buddy (who works for Reliant) change it out before we moved in (we paid him in beer and a charitable donation so I can't help you on price) and M ran grounded outlets but there's nothing wrong with the actual wiring itself.  Well, it's kind of screwy in that weird things are on the same circuits, but it's not dangerous or anything.  I'd make triple sure it's necessary before you shell out the money to rewire.
My big boy is bounding towards 3! Hoping to add a sibling. image Hipster dog is not impressed.
  • The electrician that did our house when we moved in (he is the contractor's brother and did everything, and they were amazing and super accommodating) ~ Upton Electrical Contracting at 281.670.0804.  Vince Upton is the owner.  His main electrician, Tristan, is the one who was usually over here, but Vince came over quite a few times.  HIGHLY recommend them.
