Nala started limping last night and by about 8pm she was not putting any weight on her right hind leg. This morning again she put no weight on it. We brought her in to the vet this morning and she has a lot of fluid in her knee and a partially torn ACL and MCL in her knee. For the next month she can't run, jump, or play. She can't go up and down stairs which means DH has to carry her up and down them every time she has to go outside. This may help it heal but the vet said they usually tear all the way. That would mean she would have surgery to replace the ligaments. I feel so bad for her and she is just hopping around on 3 feet.

Poor Nala! I know how stressful a dog's activity restriction can be for the entire household. I'll be thinking about all of you, and Dexter and Maggie send Nala kisses.
Here are some tips that got us through Dexter's 3 month activity restriction with the broken toe. Dexter was in his crate for 20+ out of 24 hours a day though, so if you don't have to do that to keep Nala calm, that will be good!
Chew toys, the noisier the better, are your friend. I even ended up breaking down and getting Dexter a huge fluffy stuffed one, though stuffed ones never last longer than a day in our house. He loved on that toy for 6 weeks, held it when he slept, and carried it with him everywhere when we let him get up, even outside to go potty. It was his friend. Yes, the constant squeaking will wear you down, but when Dexter didn't have a toy he would chew on his paws or leg. Vet said it's part of how dogs exhibit stress from being confined. So look out for that and be prepared for lots of toy expenses!
Lots of snuggle time. I can't count how many hours I spent on the floor spooning Dexter and just rubbing his belly and petting his face (his favorite). For us it was important that this was time we spent with Dexter without Maggie. Since Dexter wasn't getting any play time like we usually do, we made sure between the two of us that he got at least two hours outside of the crate either in our bed or on the floor WITH us each day. We couldn't think of a better way to do social interaction without playing.
Potty time on a leash, I'm sure the vet told you that though. Dexter would pull and pull every.single.time because he just wanted to run so badly. We would also not try to rush him to go potty and come back in. I'd force him to walk slowly, but he could spend as much time as he wanted sniffing or laying the grass. Talk about a lesson in patience.
Be prepared for her to regress in her training. Most of Dexter's went out the window. Even sit was a struggle some days. That might have just been Dex though, he's a bit stubborn.
On really hard days, we gave him Benadryl as a sedative to keep him sleepier and stop the crying or thrashing (Dexter did not respond well to the cone of shame after he ripped his cast off). 1 mg per pound, so 1 pill has 25 mg, and we'd give Dexter 2 pills because he's about 50 lbs.
Hugs to all of you! It will be okay! xoxo
We don't even own a crate for her. She hasn't been in one since she was a tiny puppy so she won't fit in it. I am also dreading potty on the leash. Again except going to the vet she hasn't even been on a leash in over 2 years. The vet did tell us about benadryl. I just hope the restriction helps it heal instead of tearing more.

Oh poor puppy. We had to keep our Boston terrier calm after his knee surgery for his luxating patella, it was really hard and he was only one at the tiime.
Poor Nala... I know you told me on FB but hope she feels better soon. My heart hurts for her... hard for a retriever to want to stay still too... and sometimes it's harder on mom than her.
Hang in there.
