So we all know that bettas don't get along with each other. It's like their trademark.
My sister had a betta years ago named Bill (for Kill Bill). He lived in a tank with Jack the goldfish (for Jack Sparrow). They were best friends. Jack was blind because his eyes got eaten out by a rogue koi, but that's a different story.
It's been a few years since my sister has had any fish, and she just got a betta a month or two ago; her name (the fish) is Juliette. Today she went to Petsmart to get some goldfish as well since she got a bigger tank and planned on having them live together again. But the employee at Petsmart said that goldfish and bettas don't get along together, and Bill and Jack's companionship was just a fluke.
Has anybody else mixed bettas with other fish, particularly goldfish? I thought bettas got along with any other fish than their own species. I guess not?

Basically it says that Betta tanks are too warm for goldfish, but they can get along with other fish just fine.
Its not really that they dont get along....
Goldfish:
Coldwater fish, they create more waste when they eat, so ammonia levels are higher. Being in the carp family, they like fast flow or high flow environments. Also, goldfish get big. Not to mention goldfish are actually mostly vegitarian. They can get to 10 or 12 inches long, and live 15 years.
Betta's:
Tropical warm water fish, very clean, but not as active. Stay small, like low current environments. Very much bug eaters. size average is 3 inches long and life expectancy is 3 years.
To have them in the same fish tank, living full lives and reaching full size, and have all be healthy is practically impossible.
Same here. As long as there are no other "aggressive" fish the beta/others should be fine. We had a Beta and an African Frog in the same tank and they picked on each other big time and froggie didn't make it
Hm, it's interesting. My sister's betta and goldfish never had a problem with each other. And we just always assumed the betta would do fine in a big tank with the goldfish because the usual tiny betta tanks aren't heated or anything, despite being tropical fish. We did feed them different foods though.
Both fish lived a long time, considering the goldfish got his eyes eaten out. I read that bettas normally live up to 5 years in captivity, but goldfish can live a very long time like 10 years. I think the betta was 4 or 5 and the goldfish was at least 5 or 6....which is short for a goldfish I guess, but a goldfish without eyes? We'd never had a betta that lived that long (what's that say about our fish skills? yikes. Though to be fair, we lost most of our bettas because of a big ice storm when the power/heat went out for a week).
I don't know if anyone is watching this thread anymore, but I'm not sure what type of goldfish Jack was. I don't think he was the common kind since he wasn't long and slender. He was more of a short-and-fat little guy. He looked kind of like the picture. Oh well...they were good fish.
I had an african frog. They did ok. I'm sorry about losing yours
