Separation anxiety?

So the vet called this morning with blood test results following our dog's not eating/vomiting/lethargy/fever mystery illness.  There is nothing wrong with him, not even a high white blood cell count (which would indicate some sort of infection).  His thyroid something was a bit low, but the vet said that could have been from the fever.  The fever came down from 104.5 to 100, so that's good, but I'd still like to know what's going on.  Vet gave an antibiotic shot and instructed me to keep going with the antibiotic pills just in case.

The only thing I can think of is that DH has been out of town all week, so Noodle hasn't been getting his lunchtime walk.  He's usually in the crate for 4 hours, walk, in the crate for 4 hours.  This week he was in the crate around 8 hours straight each day before I got home.  Could separation anxiety/stress cause a high fever??  That doesn't seem likely to me, but if it did cause it, I want to know that for DH's next trip OOT.

Or is there some other obscure answer my vet hasn't considered?  And is a $50 thyroid test worth it at this point?

Re: Separation anxiety?

  • Do you think he could have gotten into something? As far as I know, fevers are caused by infections (which it seems like your guy doesn't have), after vaccines, by toxins, and I think by some auto-immune disorders.

Thanks.  I guess anything's possible.  He's never outside alone, and I thought everything dangerous in the house was secure, but I certainly can't watch him every second.  He does enjoy "street food" (i.e. anything he can find on the sidewalk while we're walking), no matter how much we try to avoid it, so maybe it was something like that.  It seems like all his stomach issues are written off as mystery illness because the vet can't find a thing wrong with him, and he's healthy 98% of the time.  It's frustrating.

  • That must be really frustrating, especially since he can't tell you if he still doesn't feel well. I hope he continues to get better!
