Worms?

We just got a new puppy two days ago, she pooped today and there was a worm in it. I got a sample to take to the vet (I needed to take one in anyway) but I'm wondering if anyone has had a dog with worms before? I looked at pics online and it looks like roundworm, but I could be wrong. She's not showing any of the symptoms they talked about online but I guess I'm just not sure how serious it is. Any advice of what to expect would be great!

Re: Worms?

  • A puppy with worms is really common and usually not cause for much concern (although it's really gross!). I bet once your vet runs the sample to determine the type of worm you'll just have to give a few doses of dewormer and then retest to make sure that they're all out of her system.

Watch out when you give the dewormer - it can cause diarrhea sometimes.

  • Thanks, it makes me feel better that it's common. The breeder said she dewormed her, is it common that they still get worms or was the breeder possibly lying?

A lot of times one dose isn't enough to fully get rid of the infestation, so I wouldn't think that the breeder was lying.

When we adopted our dog from animal control I know that he had been given dewormer but still had some when we adopted him.We had to give two doses (one immediately and another 6 weeks later) before it was all taken care of.

  • Expect explosive poops!

In other news- we love pictures! Tell us about your puppy!!!

  • worms are very common in puppies but I wanted to emphasize they CAN and do kill puppies. don't be alarmed I think ts important to know the truth but my guess is your puppy is ok. they can cause severed anemia without ever seeing any signs of a worm problem in the puppy. (including eggs on a fecal exam at the vets) how long is the worm? several inches I presmue. if so and you saw it in the poop that means it is dead and the breeder was most likely telling the truth. go ahead and talk to your vet, they will probably give you another dose of dewormer to be on the safe side but your puppy should be just fine.
