Dog seizures

I have a 7 year old Beagle.  She suddenly began having seizures about a year ago.  Since then, she has had about 1 seizure every two months.  I have taken her to the vet, but after doing bloodwork, he was unable to find anything.  He suggested doing a EEG (i think that's what it was), but said it was very pricey, and we may not find anything anyway.  At this time, we really don't have that $.  The vet also suggested that we could put her on meds, but after researching the meds, I don't know if that is the route to go either because of the side effects.  She doesn't seem bothered by the seizures. Is there something else I can do to help her? Or do I just deal with the seizures?  Or, do I go with the seizure meds?  I am so torn!

Re: Dog seizures

  • Usual lurker here.  My doxie, and my mom's beagle both had Cushing's which can cause seizures.  Doxies and beagles are particularly prone to being cushinoid.    Has your beagle been tested for that? The other symptoms can include weight gain, lumpy spots of skin, patches of hair loss, joint stiffness or none of these. The dogs can develop it at any time, but at about 7-9 years old seems to be the norm. Many times the signs/symptoms are just blown off as normal aging issues, so it's hard to know.  The tests aren't that tough, but you have to make sure the dog fasts, then they do blood work, then they give him/her a really fatty meal, and test again.  My guy was always just on the high side of normal for his blood work, but given his other symptoms, we put him on meds.  I could have done a scan, but that was cost prohibitive.  The meds were about $1-3 a day, as I recall--these aren't anti-seizure meds but treat the cushing's, which stops the seizures.  From what I understand, they are usually not in pain, and live several years after diagnosis.

Hope your girl is feeling better soon!

image Don't mess with the old dogs; age and treachery will always overcome youth and skill! BS and brilliance only come with age and experience.
  • The meds work wonders. My female Chesapeake Bay started having seizures after she had a litter of pups. She had one about a month. We put her on Potassium Bromide and she hasn't had one since- about 7 years ago :-) She did get rather fat and now has quite a few fatty tumors, but those could be from another source such as her age or another health issue.
