Renewing PA driver's license from the UK...
Anyone know how to do this? I didn't realise it but my license expires in April. I'm not going home before that so I'll need to do it online / by mail. I can't figure out how to do it online - it says that I need to fill out the form online and then take it to a driver's licence centre. Anyone have experience with this? I don't have a UK license so definitely need to keep my US one.
Thanks!

Re: Renewing PA driver's license from the UK...
When I was in college I had to deal with this with PA. It was a PITA because you could only renew at a DMV in the state. And if I recall correctly, it had to be during your birth month (mine is April too!). There is a way to apply for a license that does not have your photo on it that can be done from long distance. You end up with the same license as everyone else, it just has a black box where the photo usually is. It seems like I just sent in some kind of form to do that.
The only issue is that your license is then no longer a photo id. As you live in the UK, you obviously have a passport so that's not a problem. I just don't know how UK authorities will react to your license. EVERY single time I presented mine (and I was just in a different US state) there was a comment, a discussion, a "Yes, this is a real license" comment from me.
FULL DISCLOSURE: This info is 15 years old! Things may well have changed.
My advice would be to call a DMV in PA if you can. You'll get a better answer.
Also, I thought you could only drive on a US license in the UK for 6 months (i.e.: the length of a tourist visa)? I think the only exception is for military -- under the SoFA we are allowed to take a military-provided driving course and written test on the Highway Code, then we get a piece of paper to carry along with our US license -- though I'm honestly not sure what would happen if I got pulled over and showed them my Florida license and a piece of paper from the Air Force....probably mass confusion.
Yeah, I can't drive in the UK (you can for a year) - the only time I drive is when I'm back in the states although there's a chance I'll have to drive when we're in Portugal. Although, the more I look into it, the more it looks like I can't do this remotely and will have to give up my driver's license and retake my test, etc when I'm living in the states again. This is going to be seriously annoying!

I looked into this a few years ago, and at least at the time, it didn't seem like there was any way to do this remotely (I had a PA license too). I ended up going to the DMV a few months before mine expired. They were annoyed and said that it was too early to renew it, but they let me do it anyway. So in the future, maybe you could try renewing it early. I don't know how early they'll let you do it though.
Call the PA DMV and talk to them. If I were you, I'd say things like "I'm living abroad right now" or at the moment, or whatever. If they think it's temporary, I think they'd be more inclined to help. But I think technically, you may not be allowed to keep your DL if you live abroad permanently, which is ridiculous, obviously. Call them and see what they say. Do you have any trips planned in the near future?
I just renewed my Virginia license and it was easier than I anticipated. My license was stole the summer of 2009 and getting it physically replaced was ridiculous and I was never able to.
I just completed the on-line form and had my license mailed to my in-laws in November and I picked it up in December. Since I completed the form 15 days prior to it expiring, I didn't have to mail my missing license in.
My husband renewed his late in person and it was fine. He brought his passport, with his visa and this travel materials and they let him renew. I can't recall if he called explain his siltation.
I would call and good luck.
Interesting. We plan to go back in September / October which is cutting it really close but it would be an option. And I'm kind of hoping to have a nice reason not to travel this fall so it would be better to sort it out now. Waiting until 3pm (here) to call now. Why is everything always so difficult??

ugh, I know, right?! I have to figure out how to register to vote in NY now that my parents moved from PA to NY. These things are such a PITA to deal with when you live abroad!
In North Dakota it's one year. A family friend, aged 50+ forgot to renew his for over a year and had to retake the driving test - and he failed! LOL.
I just had my dad look into this for me. He got the email address of a lady who said she could help me from a distance when I'm within 10 months of expiration. Though I suspect I will have to get a vision check done locally before they'll do it.
Looks like many places are doing it from a distance, which really surprises me.
My dad renewed for me, paid the fee etc. I do not have a new picture yet. I went home twice for wedding stuff, but didn't do it yet.
I was even pulled over once with my old card, no problem since it was renewed, I had the paper.
Do you have someone who can fill out the form and send in the $27?
