What should I do?

Our dog dexter is 4.  He keeps getting sick in the middle of the night.  About once every other week.  He usually vomits food once then bile.  I've taken him to the vet several times and I can never get an answer.  He's had every bloodwork test imaginable.  I've switched his food from blue buffalo to Merrick and while I though that fixed the problem he got sick again last night.  What should I do? I'm so tired of paying 150-300 a vet visit for them to tell me he is fine.

Re: What should I do?

  • How often do you feed him?
  • Once usually, he eats it all throughout the day, he is a grazer.

  • Find a new vet

Have you switched protein sources in the food?

  • Yes, before it was chicken, now it's turkey and duck.

  • Once I tried salmon but he was way worse then.

  • I'd try to feed him twice a day and not let him graze. Is he eating a lot of food earlier in the day and not much at night? My dog will get sick and throw up if he goes too long in between feedings.

ETA - What kind of treats does he get? How long has this been going on?

  • It's been going on for 5 months.  He got really sick 5 months ago and was having diarrhea of straight blood.  We took him to an animal hospital because it was a Sunday.  They gave him fluids overnight and the next day he was fine.  They couldn't give us an answer as to what was wrong with him even after charging us $1700 for testing.  He usually gets a milk bone treat once a day and bill jack training treats once a day.  He has been eating those for years now.

  • I'd also have him start eating scheduled meals and ensure he's eating something fairly close to bedtime.  It could also be a protein issue.  If those don't help, I'd find a new vet.  Regular vomiting is not normal and you need a vet that will get to the bottom of the problem.

  • Thanks for the suggestions. I will start feeding him twice a day.
