Are you still going to the breastfeeding support groups?  I'm assuming you go to the ones at Maine General. I was thinking of going to the ones in Waterville and was hoping you could let me know what to expect.

Re: **shuga**

  • We do still go, mostly for the socialization part since we've got the hang of BFing. ;)

I've never been to the one in Waterville but I think Betina runs the group and it isn't quite as nice/helpful/fun as the one in Augusta. She just isn't as passionate as Janet which is odd since she is a LC (this is just what I have heard from the other moms at the group). I guess she came down to lead the group here once and another mom basically ran the group.

Baby ages range from days old to 4 years old. Some moms are first timers some have a couple kids. All the moms in my group are super helpful and understanding. I think the thing I like the best is that I feel like I can be me and no one will judge me there (I can be honest that my 14 month old still nurses A TON which I would not put out on facebook or bring up in a conversation with my family). And other moms are doing the same things that I do which I think are out of the ordinary but to have another person there saying she does the same thing makes me feel fantastic. Conversations range from beginning latch in the first days to how to deal with temper tantrums in toddlers. Basically nothing is off the table as long as it relates to parenting.

The set up is that we go around the room. The LC will say, "Brianne, you start." And I would introduce myself and Abe and say his age. Then I talk about any issues we are having or questions. A lot of times I just say that we are still chugging along and everything is good.

They will also allow you to weigh him so you can see how much weight he is gaining week to week. I loved this in the first few months.

I think that is about it. I can't express how much I love my LC and the group. Let me know how it goes.

  • Jumping in - is Betina also an LC at Midcoast???   How many Betina's can there by?    She is not a favorite person of mine....just sayin'.

  • Thanks! I think the one in Waterville is run by Cheryl and Barbara actually. I met both in the hospital and are great. When I was on the phone today with Cheryl about some bf-ing issues I'm working on I asked her if I could have someone work with me on the latch a little more in group this week and she told me to get there a few minutes early since it might be distracting to have her help me in group. I guess I just thought that's what the group was for, so was confused when she said that. However, I guess if she's leading the group I can see her point. Either way, I'm looking forward to going. Bf-ing has been pretty rough so far for me and the baby!
  • Annie - It HAS to be the same one!

Andrea - Yeah, most of what we do during group time is talk. We talk about pumping, milk production, introducing foods, time outs, EVERYTHING. But there have been a few times that she had the rest of us talk while she helped a new mom with latch so I can see why they would say come early. We sit around and nurse but we have a conversation too!

This.  The few times I ran into her, she was not nearly as friendly and caring as Janet.  I think she works mainly out of MMC though Annie.
