My mom finally had her appointment with the neurologist at Mayo clinic (another opinion after the horribly dismissive, demeaning, assholeish doctor at Shands). I wasn't able to go with her but she just called and the appointment went really well. This doctor made it very clear that what my mom has been going through is not okay and that she is going to get to the bottom of it. She doesn't think it's MS but is ordering some additional tests before ruling it out officially. She gave a full neurological exam (unlike the Shands doc) and spend a lot of time with my mom.
She asked my mom about a lot of factors that no other doctor has asked her about, including some of my grandmother's health issues. She also noticed some things about my mom's facial expressions, etc that she said were possible symptoms of other issues. Overall, this doctor is taking my mom's case very seriously. The doctor also gave my mom several referrals within Mayo in order to try and weed out some of the medications she takes for other problems (residual issues from her breast cancer, adrenal gland issues). The doctor wants to work closely with others to come up with a comprehensive approach.
Sorry if this was incredibly rambly (not a real word) but I'm just so relieved. Yes, she didn't get any definitive answers, but this doctor is taking it seriously and didn't just try to refer my mom to a pain specialist. Thanks for all the input and support you guys have given me. I feel like this is a great starting point and hopefully it will only get better from here on out.
Re: Update on my mom
I am so so happy to hear this! I hope they are able to keep the momentum going and find some answers!
Thanks so much everyone. I really appreciate the support.
I'm so glad to hear that your mom had a good, productive appointment- and that things are moving forward in a positive direction for her!
