Anyone make their own Dishwasher Detergent?
I'll be out of that before laundry detergent and may give that a go.
Re: Anyone make their own Dishwasher Detergent?
I have a friend that does and loves it.
1 cup borax
1 cup baking soda
1/4 cup kosher slat
2 packets unsweetened lemonade mix (koolaid)
Mix it all together, use one TBS per load.
Use white vinegar as a rinse agent.
Random piece of info - not sure how much weight I'm giving it, as I can't find anything definitive. I was looking at recipes for dishwasher detergent and found several instances of people now questioning whether Borax is actually safe to use in dishwasher detergent because it is unsafe to ingest and may not be rinsed away as well as once thought by the dishwasher.
Apparently it is very poorly absorbed through skin contact so it is fine to use in laundry detergent - but, possibly questionable in applications where it is in contact with food surfaces.
I *personally* - did pause out of slight concern but haven't found any hard facts and kindof feel like the gunk in the commercial detergents is probably worse , so I'm going to go for it - but thought I'd share the "info" in case you want to research and DO find something that persuades you one way or another.
We did for a while and it just didn't get the job done. I mostly used the recipe above, but instead of Kool-Aid, we used actual citric acid.
Glasses and silverware were never sparkling clean. We have white dishes and it was too abrasive and wore the enameled finish a bit, causing dishes to stain.
I still use plain vinegar in the little Jet Dry door thingy, though. But I'll never stray from Cascade again.
