Does anyone have experience with slipcovers? (Using them or making them)

Our living room couch and chair are in a sad state and we were talking about replacing them but I would much rather slipcover them because the frames are fine and I like the shape and they are comfortable.  What I don't like are sloppy/drapey style slipcovers.  Making fitted ones from scratch really intimidates me.  I can do basic sewing but my skills mostly come from 8th grade home-ec.  (:

Anyhow, I found a great great deal on slipcovers online that have a boxpleat along the bottom which I love.  They are just one piece though and I think slipping the back/bottom cushions will make them look much nicer and I think I can easily enough tailor the sides.  So, does it seem like a good plan to order an extra sofa slipcover and use that fabric to slip the cushions?  I just can't imagine starting from scratch but I think if I have something, even ill fitting, I can work with it.

Or if anyone has any other recommendations or suggestions I would love to hear them.  Thanks!  This project gives me a headache but I'm motivated to get some house stuff accomplished and want to get going on it soon!

  • Sounds like a good plan to me! Making cushion covers is like making a pillow with a zipper opening on the back.

There are also a bunch of how to  books on fitted slipcovers. You can get them at the library. Then you could just buy whatever yardage you like. I have made 4 or 5 fitted slipcovers and the all look great and last forever, nicer then the store. I always buy Waverly fabrics. LOL Mostly, because I like the prints and colors so much.

  • This is exactly how I have made all of my slip covers. (All two of them. But they turned out well and I had very little experience at that time.)

  • That sounds like a great idea; I'd have never thought of that!

I make slipcovers by cutting and pinning inside-out, and fitting and sewing.  It is a lot of work but then you have perfectly fitting covers. I still like your plan!

  • Good idea!

Where did you find the great deal? I'm in the market for slipcovers and I might do the same thing!
