Hematoma experiences...

Hi Ladies. Our 4 year old Golden recently had a hematoma in her left ear. It was drained and she went back today for a check up and the hematoma is back. They drained it again and put her on steroids. She goes back in on Thursday for another check. If the ear is filled again, she may have to have surgery.

The vet believes it is allergy related. She's had three ear infections lately so she shakes her head which causes the hematoma.

Anyone deal with this? Has your dog had the surgery?

Re: Hematoma experiences...

  • Yes, my dog did. They didn't even try steroids, it was pretty bad. The surgery wasn't such a big deal, although the ear looked horrible for a while afterwards. We had no recurrance after that.
  • Thanks so much for responding. Did your dog have it in both ears or just one?
  • ear hematomas are such a pain.  They actually will eventually heal on their own. There is just a risk that the ear will scar down and look funny.  Surgery is the best way to get the ear healed quickly and look good cosmetically.  But even surgery isn't 100% nor is their a standard way of doing the surgery.

He actually had one in both ears, at separate times. One was a seroma, but same difference, as far as treatment went. The first one was very small, and after it was drained, it healed up OK. The second one, his ear was hugely swollen, and he was so uncomfortable. No way I could have left it like that. They put him under, drained it, and basically quilted it with stitches, so that it couldn't fill back up. He had to keep the stitches in for ages, it seemed to me. I want to say it was three or four weeks, but they wanted the ear good and scarred. It was sort of a Frankenstein ear during that time, and it wasn't too pretty even after they took the stitches out. After a while, though, it looked close to the way it had before.

Do you have specific concerns about the surgery?

  • I just feel so bad for her. My Golden growing up had hematomas but they never did surgery, just kept draining them.

Right now she has this ridiculous bandage on her head and like you said she'll have to be bandaged for 3-4 weeks with a cone. That is aweful.

I want it to not happen again so I'm hoping the steroids help for the time being. We'll know on Thursday.

  • Our lab had a hematoma that went down on it's own without being drained on the inside of her ear. I had a saint bernard that had a huge hematoma on the flap of her ear that had to be surgically cut. It wasn't really a big deal and she just ended up with a little bit of scar tissue on the inside of the ear. Is the hematoma on the inside of the ear or the flap?
  • It's on her ear flap.
