Traveling

DH, Lady, and I are going to be driving next weekend to meet a potential new member of our family. DH and I are very excited, but we're driving almost two states away to meet her. I'm trying to get a list together of everything we will need to take with us to safely travel with 1-2 dogs. Here's what I have so far, please add anything you think we will need:

-Crates for hotel stay, beds that go in the crates

-car harnesses and blankets for the seats.

-food, bowls, water bowls, bottled water (?)

-leashes, updated tags,

-extra blankets in case of inclement weather

-First Aid kit: what should go in it?

That's all I have on my list so far. I'd love any tips on traveling this far with dogs. This is the first time we will be driving more than three hours with a dog. We are breaking the trip up over three or four days.  Any good websites on traveling would be much appreciated too!

Re: Traveling

  • A copy of shot records just in case you need to go to a vet while traveling.
  • trash bags, paper towels and wet wipes

Those are definitely very important! I was so focused on the dog specific needs that I didn't even think about clean-up.

Shot records are good too. I think I actually have a copy of those too.

  • We travel about 6 hours with Bailey every couple months to visit family. We have a travel water bottle that is great.

  • We just traveled 20 hours down and back with Zoey to visit my mom over Christmas.

    We had:
    Car harness
Blanket for the seat (with an extra just in case)
Soft toys, balls, chews (antler, nylabone)
    Treats
    Food/ bottled water
    Leash
    Plastic baggies
    Wet wipes

That's basically it. We didn't stop anywhere; we drove straight through. She was really amazing for the car ride. H gave her a couple of bites of his jerky while we traveled, and whenever we stopped to fill the tank/empty our bladders/take a break, she got out of the car to stretch/potty/eat if it was mealtime. She never drank in the car, and drank very little on stops.
