bald spot on cat

I just noticed my cat has about a quarter-sized bald spot on his stomach.  It's got a small scab in the middle and he has been licking it.   Any insight as to what it could be or how to treat it?

Re: bald spot on cat

  • We ran into this with our female cat.  She's fixed, but the vet suspected that a part of her lady parts (like a microscopic piece) may have been forgotten during her spaying since she would sometimes goes into what we call "phantom heat" and would meow a lot like she was in heat.  Part of this behavior included over grooming and she would get bald spots.  However, we noticed it was happening because we were traveling a lot at the time and taking her with us and the car rides were highly stressful for her.  Since we've stopped traveling so much, she hasn't had the symptoms as strongly.  Anyways, try to think about anything that might be stressing your cat out - like a new pet/child in the house,  a different schedule in the household, even a stray cat hanging around outside.  We didn't really "treat" the spots, but we did watch her and try to stop her from licking.  You'll probably want to take him to the vet just to rule out any skin conditions.
