Cry it out?

That's the only way I could think to explain it. And being 3 days from my due date, babies are on my brain like crazy...

Anyway, DH & I live in an apartment complex with several neighbors. Our dog, Bubba, has a mild case of seperation anxiety; I'm assuming it's due to the fact that someone is always home with him and he isn't used to being alone. When we leave he will bark and whine, and it progresses to loud howling.

We have resorted to putting his Thundershirt on about 30 minutes before we leave the house, and setting out a special treat for him. We will also ignore his frantic behavior as we put on our shoes and coats. The Thundershirt seems to have helped with the crying (I can tell because I hear him as I walk to my car). But when we get home, he hasn't touched his treat and he is usually sitting right in front of the door. We ignore him when we get home until he calms down and stops jumping and whining.

My question is, will this be an effective method in getting him accustomed to being alone? I'm under no illusion that it won't be a gradual process, but I'm wondering if any of you ladies have had a similar experience or have any advice for me. TIA.

Re: Cry it out?

  • You may want to start with shorter periods of time being gone.

You might want to pick up a copy of "I'll be Home Soon" by Patricia McConnell. It talks about dealing with SA.
