Would you rather have your flight delayed by 8 hours or lose your luggage?
Re: Would you rather?
It really depends (on whether it's lost permanently or they'll find it and send it in a couple of days), and whether I'm on some kind of a time crunch to get somewhere for an event or something.
If I'm not trying to make it to a wedding or a work event, then I wouldn't mind waiting. If there's a deadline to getting there, I can make do without my luggage if I can get there on time.
For the record, the one time my family had a major airline snafu and our luggage was lost/delayed, the airline gave us $100 per person to go buy some clothes and toiletries for the first couple of days. It was not ideal but it worked out ok. Of course, this was an international flight with a European airline and was about 10 years ago, so I don't know if the same rules would apply today.
Now I'm really curious...

I'd definitely rather wait. Our bags didn't make it on our flight when we first moved to Misawa, and we spent 4 days in a blizzard with no coats, boots, or belongings of any kind. That sucked.
Plus I've gotten good at waiting around at airports. Next week when I fly back I'll be sitting around airports for at least 15 hours, all before an 11-12 hour flight to Japan. Yaaaaaay...
