Would you rather?

Would you rather have your flight delayed by 8 hours or lose your luggage?

Re: Would you rather?

  • Ouch! I would say have my flight delayed, because then I could find something to do with my time. If my luggage were lost, I would probably have to go spend money on replacing things like underwear right away.
  • Flight delayed-I could make the most of 8 hrs. With my luggage lost, I would have to scramble to find everything.

  • Flight delayed. I could find ways to pass the time. Losing my luggage would mean spending money on replacing items.
  • I have been on enough delayed flights to know I can deal with passing the time better than I could losing my luggage. My greatest fear when flying is that I will lose my luggage.

  • It really depends (on whether it's lost permanently or they'll find it and send it in a couple of days), and whether I'm on some kind of a time crunch to get somewhere for an event or something.

If I'm not trying to make it to a wedding or a work event, then I wouldn't mind waiting. If there's a deadline to getting there, I can make do without my luggage if I can get there on time.

For the record, the one time my family had a major airline snafu and our luggage was lost/delayed, the airline gave us $100 per person to go buy some clothes and toiletries for the first couple of days. It was not ideal but it worked out ok. Of course, this was an international flight with a European airline and was about 10 years ago, so I don't know if the same rules would apply today.

  • Lose my luggage. I hate everything about flying and eight hours in an airport? No thank you. Plus, you get an excuse to go shopping. I'm assuming you would eventually get your luggage back though, so maybe I shouldn't assume that.

Yeah, that's the kicker. And whether you have things that can't be replaced with you. I would definitely wait 8 hrs over even the chance that you wouldn't get your luggage back. I've had to wait weeks to get lost luggage back, too. I've never flown on business though, only to visit people or for vacation. I've been delayed several hours and the worst that's happened was missing a connecting flight. That can be stressful to get a new flight but the airline has to set that up, if they are delayed.
  • I'd definitely rather wait. Our bags didn't make it on our flight when we first moved to Misawa, and we spent 4 days in a blizzard with no coats, boots, or belongings of any kind. That sucked.

Plus I've gotten good at waiting around at airports. Next week when I fly back I'll be sitting around airports for at least 15 hours, all before an 11-12 hour flight to Japan. Yaaaaaay...
