Chicken soup dog food=stinky gas?

So I am still gradually switching Magic to the Chicken Soup dog food but I've noticed that his gas is NASTY! And it happens more often. He doesn't seem to be eating as much (which I've heard/read would happen) but I just hope it's not upsetting his stomach. Thanks for any insight :)

Re: Chicken soup dog food=stinky gas?

  • Some dogs will have more gas on one food versus another. Zoey got a mixture of Canidae and Chicken Soup Puppy for the first month we had her. I really can't remember if her gas was horrible; we switched her to raw after that first month. Her gas is almost nonexistent now, but when she does let one loose, it's still deadly.

Check your pup's poops to see if the food isn't agreeing with his stomach. He'll likely have softer poop if that's the case. And if it really bothers you, go with a different food! I know some of the ladies on here have had success greatly reducing gassiness by switching foods.

They started out softer than normal but have gone back to normal. He's still getting some of the old stuff too. I think I'll just try to stick it out a little longer and see if it will get better. He seems to like it :)

  • it could just be the fact that you're switching foods and once he's adjusted the gas will decrease. Both our dogs had gas while switching to a new food, but stopped once they adjusted (except Jasper, he's just a stinker all the way around! :D)
  • I don't know if this is insightful, but its my personal experience anyway. I fed my dog Chicken Soup for years. She lived to be 18 & responded well to the food. When she passed & we got a puppy, we fed the puppy Chicken Soup for puppies. Chilly, the puppy, did not respond well to this food. It gave her very loose stools. We found Canidae worked best for her.
So, the moral of my story: although I really liked Chicken Soup, it might not be right for every dog. Give it a month or so after you switch over completely. If your pup is still gassy, I suppose you should try something else.

Thanks :)  I know every dog is different and different foods work for each. Thanks for your input!

  • Give it 3 or 4 weeks on 100% of the new food. If it's still bad, you may want to switch to something that is a better fit for his belly.

G does well on Wellness Chicken, but the Wellness lamb makes him SO gassy. The fish can too, actually and it makes his poop soft but the chicken is fine. It may be as simple as that :)

  • My cat had stinky gas (and poop) on CS. My other cat had no problems. I agree with PP to finish the transition and then see what happens!

My cats were stinky when we first switched, but it got better eventually.
