I got a 5x8, runner, and 2x3 area rug (all matching) from jcpenney when I was pregnant for our living room/entry area. (spring 2008). I have rug pads underneath, just thick enough ones to provide a bit of extra cushion and keep them from sliding.
I'm wondering, how long should they be lasting? The living room is the main area that we spend time, DD plays there, etc., and the entry is basically the main/only entry point for our house. I vacuum them once a week w/the Dyson and steam clean them once or twice a year.
They aren't falling apart or thread bare or anything, just not cushy like they used to be and are sort of not as true to color as they used to be. Normal, right? Is 4 years a pretty good span for rugs? What is the average lifetime for an area rug?
Re: S/O: How long should good area rugs last?
JC Penny machine made? I'd expect something like what i'm picturing to last about the same amount of time as wall-to-wall carpet. (so...longer than 4 years)
Handmade wool - decades. I've got rugs in my house that my mom handed down to me beccause they didn't fit in her little place in the city once she downsized.
She bought them around 15-20 years ago and when i got them cleaned they looked like new. they've been in my house for 4 years now and I treat them like crap, but they always look great again after we vacuum and spot clean the dog slobber.

Exactly what I would have said. Except some of the handed down rugs are even older!
"good rugs" should last for many years. I have a Persian style rug from RH that I bought 12 years ago. It's always been in my living room (through out a few different places) and it's still looks excellent.
Rugs are one of those things that is sometimes pays to spend a bit more once, instead of buying inexpensive rugs and having them fall apart in 5-6 years...
I agree except that we have pets and a kid. Rugs don't last long in my house due to stains, not wear or discoloring. We have nice persians in our formal living room and master bedroom which are kid/pet free zones that have both lasted for a long time. But the others... Not so much.

Polypropylene (plastic) rugs will start looking sh!tty after not very long. I think our first rug in our apartment started looking pretty tired after a couple of years. Wool of any kind should last longer, at least that's my experience. I've got one machine-made wool rug. It doesn't look as good as the handmade wool, but it is a bit older and was a lot cheaper, so it may have been crappy (and not 100%) wool to start with. I'm not sure how handmade in general stands up versus machine made. But the handmade wool in my foyer better last a long damn time (if it dies before I do, I'll be PO'd). It cost us a mint and definitely isn't something I want to replace even every decade.
I know you didn't really ask...but I figured I'll throw in my two cents anyway. If you want to get something high quality that will stand up to pets and kids I'd highly recommend keeping an eye out for flat-woven wool rugs. That's what my mom had in the living room and dining room when we were growing up and those suckers survived 3 kids, 1 dog, an endless parade of cats, and many many parties. And now they're in my house, where they also have to deal with a slobbery dog, a clumsy me, and 2 cats who think sharpening their claws on the rug is a rockin' good time.
They aren't pristine anymore, but if I give them a good vacuum and then go to town with a soft scrub brush and some slightly soapy water on whatever stains have accumulated they end up looking great again. Because they don't have a pile I don't have to be as careful scrubbing the crap out of them so it's easier to get stains out. And the traditional persian-ish pattern in dark colors hides a lot honestly. (I think her/my rugs are actually from afghanistan? maybe? I don't remember.)
