Sunday night we noticed our male cat was acting strange. Very sleepy and didn't eat dinner. Early Monday morning I found him on the kitchen floor. In several spots there was this frothy white vomit.
He was not getting up for anything, so we decided to take him to the vet.
We found out that he had a blockage and needed a catheter. He stayed at the vet's office over night and we just now brought him home. He was still urinating a bit of blood so the vet wants to see him tomorrow.
We asked what we can do to help this and the vet said DIET. The thing is, we only feed high quality food. For dry the kitties get Wellness Core. At dinner time they are fed wet food. We buy Wellness, Tiki Cat, Core, and other foods that are of the same quality. I check all labels, mostly feed grain free, and check the internet for quality ratings before purchasing any new foods.
The can of food he gave us to take home is something we could only get there. I look at the ingredients and the first thing I see is pork by product and some other icky things.
So, we do you say we should do?
ETA: he is fixed
Re: Cat with urinary blockage-HELP!
5 cats. 1 baby.
Increasing water intake is very helpful also.
- Mix the wet food with water
- Add additional water sources around the house
- Try a water fountain, some cats are enticed to drink more with this
Stress can also contribute to urinary issues
- Any chance your toddler is freaking him out?
- Does he have a safe place to go where he can feel safe? Lots of vertical space?
- Try a Feliway diffuser in the room where he spends the most time
Good luck!
I had luck trying some of the above and keeping Lily from a recurrence without using the vets crap food, but I wouldn't rule out using that myself if Lily has additional issues someday.
ETA: also, I stumbled across this site when Lily was ill and it has some interesting info, even though I still don't feed 100% wet, it's educational.

We're using the vet's food right now. Sherlock had urinary issues just a week ago. I plan on switching him off of it after being on it for a few weeks. From what I've read online, the food over acidify's the cat's urine and can cause crystals on its own (but of a different type than they usually get). I've been mixing water into his wet food now to help increase his water intake and I've also tried (and failed) to get him interested in running water. The good thing about the special food is that it entices them to drink more. If you can do that on your own, then more power to you!
But for now, I'd use the food they provided. Our vet is having us keep Sherlock on the Urinary SO she provided for about 2 months and then we'll get another urine sample from him, make sure he's doing fine, and then I can switch him back.
