What is the best vacation you have ever taken?
Re: Qotd Wednesday
We went to Rome and Florence a few years ago and that was an amazing experience. I'd like to pat myself on the back and say I did a really good job of planning it to maximize our time there.
But for pure relaxation and gluttony, our trip to Napa and Sonoma last year was pretty good. We just ate and drank for five days straight and stayed in an awesome resort. It's hard to beat that.
Our honeymoon in 2005 - we spent 4 days in the Cook Islands and 2.5 weeks in New Zealand (both north and south islands). It was really amazing.
Runner-up would be our trip to India in 2006.

"What is a week-end?"
Top 3: 3 weeks in Italy. 2 weeks on St. Bart. 1 week in the Keys with DH just exploring and totally relaxing.
On my bucket list was a trip to Macchu Picchu and we did that 5 years ago. Macchu Picchu was breathtaking but the whole trip was very stressful. So glad I got to see it but never so happy to return from a trip.
Well, my honeymoon is the obvious one (two weeks in Rome, Florence, and Positano). The food was amazing, the sights were beautiful, we walked *everywhere* so we didn't gain any weight even though we were constantly eating . . . I would go back in a heartbeat.
But I also really loved the two weeks my BFF and I spent in New Zealand. We drove, so we really got to see the whole country (both islands) and it is amazingly beautiful. We got to take a helicopter up to the top of a glacier, see underwater caves, all kinds of stuff . . . the only thing that sucked about it was that DH (then BF) wasn't there!

Before kids: Honeymoon to Belize--2 full weeks of relaxation and fun sites
After kids: A week in Avon, NC (Outer Banks) in a house on the beach. Even with kids (one the first time, 2 the next), it was totally relaxing.

Too funny - I also can't quite choose between Italy and Napa/Sonoma. And our trip to Spain this year was awesome, as well. Hmmm... perhaps time to plan this year's vacation?
Honeymoon to Ireland and France!
DH and I had such a wonderful time. In Ireland we drove around the countryside went to Galway, Tralee, Dingle, and Kinsale. The weather was really beautiful for late May. In France we took trains and went to Mount St. Michel, Amboise (which included a tour of the Loire Valley Castles), and Paris.
It was so much fun using my French, seeing new sites with DH, and eating awesome food. The only downside was a little illness near the end of our trip.

Seriously - a Greek Island cruise with a couple bonus days in Venice.
our two week trip to Hawaii last year. pretty much everything about it was glorious.
in fact, exactly one year ago today I was looking out at this view while eating breakfast (fresh pineapple, granola and yogurt) on our lanai.
Probably either our honeymoon or our 1 year anniversary trip--both were to San Diego and we stayed at the Hotel Del Coronado, which was just luxurious and wonderful.
Sadly, because I love to travel, DH and I haven't taken any big vacations together. I'd say my favorite vacation with just DH was our honeymoon in the NC mountains. We skied, had yummy meals (minus one disaster) and got to go to my favorite place, Biltmore House.
My favorite trip ever was probably when my mom took my sister and I to Hawaii when I was in 8th grade. She had the opportunity to go teach a class there and she told the people who invited her that she was not coming without her kids, so they paid for us to come as well. We stayed with one of the sponsors of the class, so he son took us on some hikes and things that were more local than touristy, plus we got to do a lot of the neat tourist stuff.
Top two:
honeymoon in St. Thomas. So relaxing!
10-day trip to Belize: this was our last big vacation before I got pregnant with DD. We did three days in the jungle and a week at the beach. We ate some fabulous meals, saw beautiful sights and relaxed. I would go back in a heartbeat!
This is a tough one, and I haven't even traveled a lot. My favorite domestic vacation was when I was 15 and we went to visit my family in AZ. We rented a huge van and traveled to Tombstone, north through the reservation, stopped at the four corners, and headed into Durango, CO where we took a train up into the mountains to Silverton. We all got on each others' nerves at some point, but it's funny to look back on.
Internationally, it's a tie between Mallorca and Germany- both were when I studied abroad. I went to Germany around Easter to meet my penpal for the first time. It was awesome to finally meet her and her family, and they made me feel really welcome. Plus, it's nice to sightsee with locals and not worry about maps, directions, etc.
Planning Bio
tie: two weeks in australia with my gay boyfriend in 2004 (pre-DH) was so much fun. we ate, drank, and laughed our way around sydney, melbourne, and tasmania.
DH's & my first real vacation together in prague. went with my boyfriend and came home engaged! even though we got robbed our "last night" there, stranded for two days because of plane trouble then a blizzard but up until the last night we had an amazing time.
i am really impressed with the trips listed on here. i never seemed to have enough money or vacation time to take a really great vacation in my 20s.
our honeymoon to Anguilla was the first real vacation we took together. it was great. our trip to spain last year was a totally different trip but hard to compare. we have done some little domestic trips here and there (New Orleans, San Fran, Boston) but nothing on a grand scale. i am a little intimidate by tackling something like New Zeland or Austrialia from a planning perspective.
Wines and I had a very similar HM (I think you wrote the date down wrong, WnW) - we did New Zealand and French Polynesia and it was beyond awesome, esp. NZ.
Pre-DH, my sister and I roughed it in Costa Rica (stayed in hostels, only traveled w/ 1 backpack) and had an amazing time. We also had a fabulous time in Australia, scuba-diving the Great Barrier Reef was so incredible and so beautiful!
Not vacations but I absolutely loved: Prague, Dubai, Spain, Turkey, Italy, Tallinn, and the Arctic Circle in Finland (there are probably others at the top of my list that are escaping me now).
I've got 5 out of 7 continents down (Africa and Antarctica are on my bucket list).
I was quite pleased with our honeymoon. We flew to Denver and drove down through the continental divide to Pagosa Springs, where we stayed in the eco luxury resort and had 24 hour access to soaking in the hot springs.
We took a day trip to Mesa Verde Park which is apparently a very popular international attraction. We saw thundersnow in the morning and blue skies and cleared plains in the evening. We then drove to the Four Corners monument to visit New Mexico, Utah and Arizona. We also had couples massages and facials. It was the most beautiful, relaxing trip I've ever been on.
I think my favorite trip was our 2 week honeymoon to Italy with DH. We went to Lake Como, hiked the Cinque Terre, went to Pisa, Forence, and then spent a week in Rome where we were able to get Sposi Novelli tickets and tickets to see the underground of the dead in the Vatican.
Pre-DH, my favorite trip was to Greece with my BFF.
My favorite vacation was when we went to Ireland for 10 days in June 2007 with another couple. We really had nothing planned out and just decided each day what we wanted to see and how far to drive and just called B&Bs on the way. Plus it was pretty sweet to celebrate my 25th birthday in Ireland
Our trip to Spain this past May is a close second...it was a great way to celebrate our 5 year wedding anniversary and we did and saw so much cool stuff.
I have yet to have a favorite vacation. Unless you count trips to the Adirondacks when I was little with my parents.
Our honeymoon in Toronto was a disaster, DH got food poisoning and was down for the count 2 of our 3 days there. We went for 3 days to Tennessee a couple years ago, and that was ok, we went back to Tennessee last summer and it was really stressful because the dogs did not like being in a new place.
In February we're going back to Toronto for a week - so hopefully that will finally be my favorite vacation as an adult!
DH's job sucks, so we can't really plan expensive vacations that require a plane ride
We make the rockin' world go 'round.
