Mr. K won 2 ice skating passes...Advice needed, por favor.

We went to a hockey game last week and he won 2 free passes.

This is what went through my head:

Smile YAY!  But, Tongue Tied Oh no! I suck at ice skating. Embarrassed I am going to be on my butt more than I will be skating. Big Smile Eh, what the heck, I will just treat it as another adventure! Wink

So, that's what we're doing on Saturday.

Both of us are awful ice skaters, so it should be interesting. The last time I went ice skating was with X when we were first dating back in 2003. I remember the only way I could stop was to run into the sides of the arena. LOL!

Does anyone have any advice they can give me, so I am not on my a$$ the entire time?

This is pretty much how I "ice skate" too ;) so I'm no help!

But you'll have fun even if you are on yourasss most of the time! Don't worry!

  • This sounds super fun! Who cares if you suck at ice-skating...look at it as an adventure! You're clearly athletic...you might be better than you think!

On a related side note, one of my dream dates is to go ice-skating in Coronado Island which is in San Diego. It's an outdoor rink in front of a gorgeous historic hotel only at Christmas time...but ON THE BEACH! How freaking romantic is that?  Ah, but then I'd have to live back in San Diego.

  • Have you ever roller skated/bladed? Ice skating is the same way, just on ice. I just move at a slow pace until I feel more comfortable. I have fallen maybe twice in the 5 or 6 times that I've gone, and that's saying something, because I'm a giant klutz.
It's just me and my Marlon now... and I LOVE it that way!

  • I think I was on skates before I could walk bc I grew up in Michigan.

Just try to glide and not "walk" (don't pick up your feet/skates). Don't be afraid to fall, it doesn't hurt that much and hardly ever bruises.

10 years! While I love where I live now (Pacific Northwest), SD will always be like home to me!

  • Hang on to the edge the first loop around and you should get back into the swing of things. Keep your legs wider apart because that helps prevent you from falling. We went a few weeks ago, one of FI's friends is trying to get him to join an adult hockey league but FI had never ice skated before. It had been 17 years for me! We were a little awkward at first, but got the hang of it.
  • Awesome! Thanks ladies!

  • I'm a skating coach, so here's my advice FWIW.

First of all, DON'T hold onto the boards.  It's a really bad idea to use them for balance - that's not why they're there.  You never know when you can slip, and you don't want to hit them if you fall.

Keep your feet closer together.  You need your weight to be centered to help maintain your balance.

Hold your arms to the side, but a little bit in front of you.  It will help keep your weight forward.  If you do fall, it's better to fall towards your front because you can break your own fall.

Take little steps to start to get comfortable on the ice.  Push with your edges - if you have toepicks, you want them out of the ice because you can trip easily.

If you do fall, roll over onto all fours to get up.  Don't try to push yourself up with your arms behind you.

    GL!
