s/o: How many of your parents graduated college? Siblings?

Neither my father nor mother graduated from college (think of small town Nebraska farm family and my dad took over family farm) BUT every single one of my siblings has gotten a 4 year college degree and two of us have gotten advance degrees (Master's for me in education and my sister got her Doctorate in Occ. Therapy).  It was expected we would do well in high school and be able to go onto college and get a degree.  I sometimes think, in retrospect, my mother especially pushed this because she didn't want us to have the difficult lives of a farming family only type income.  Haha my brother is now working on taking over the family farm and expanding successfully in the seed corn business, but he basically went to college to play football so although he graduated with a Social Science degree, he has yet to use it.

How many of your family members graduated college?

Re: s/o: How many of your parents graduated college? Siblings?

  • I am the only one with a degree in my immediate family.  My sister doesn't even have her GED and my brother went to college for a year then joined the military.  Neither of my parents went to college.

DH and BIL went to college and both graduated.  Dh does not use his degree.  He's cursed with needing a job that he works with his hands (i.e. jewelry, watches, teeth, etc).  He couldn't do a desk job.

  • Mom - masters.  She was a stay at home mom until I was in junior high.  I watched her struggle as a non traditional student.

Father - did not.  Could sell anything in the world to anyone, sold insurance

Brother - computer science degree.   He does very well for himself but he is wicked smart and very good at numbers / computers.

Me - BA in education, JD  I wanted to go to hair school out of high school.  Parents said "no" and said I have to go to college first.   I'm not good at hair/ makeup so it is probably a good thing :)

MIL and FIL - both college educated but only 1 out of 6 kids went to college.  DH is slowly getting his degree in Business.  Thank you DH's employer for paying for it.   DH was not really encouraged to go to college.  He applied for Milford but didn't get a scholarship so didn't go.  He is very smart and does well in school.  I feel he could have been encouraged and pushed a bit to succeed and not sure why it was not explained to him there are pell grants, etc. to go to school.   He makes more than I do, worked his way up.

I saw my mom struggle to balance family, etc while going to school.  I see it first hand with DH trying to work his hours then go to school.  I do not want this for my girls.   It is so much easier to do this stuff while you are younger and don't have a full time job and family.   If one wanted to be a plumber, I would be okay with it.  Have you seen how much they bill per hour?

I always joke that I want to send DH to school to be a mechanic (his original dream) because he is good at that stuff.

  • Neither of my parents graduated college. Both have their GED's. My brother didn't graduate high school.

I am the only one in my immediate family w/ a "real" HS diploma, and will be the only one out my close family to have a BA, and then getting my masters really makes me stand out!

  • My mom went 1 semester. Dad went back after they had kids and has like 2 classes left but dropped out.

I have a Bachelor's plus a certificate. 1 brother plans to go back one day and the other one went to hair school and now is going for a Bachelor's after changing careers.

  • Mom - Went to college for 1 year, then decided to get married.  She says she regrets it so much.  She was a bank teller for much of my early childhood, and now works for my father.

Dad - BA in Business.  He is an insurance agent.  He worked in factories and foundaries when I was young.  When I turned 2, he got the agency and has worked for himself ever since.

Brother - BS in Science.  Wanted to be a conservation agent but apparently you have to know someone to get in with the State.  He is now an assistant store manager at a home improvement store.

Me - AAS in Computer Programming and then a BS in Business Administration.  I obtained my degree while working fulltime at my current job.  They have a loan and forgiveness program and I am working off my educational costs.

  • Both my parents earned their master's degrees. My brother has two master's degrees but only uses one for his current job. He would like a job that would let him use the other (healthcare administration). I have my master's but wish I had earned it differently (different school, different field/concentration) although the way I did it afforded me good experience and higher salary.

  • Me: Bachelor;s, working on my masters

    Mom: Masters

    Dad: some college, no degree

Brother: Masters in bio-medical engineering, Masters in Mechanical engineering (in June)

Sister: 2nd year in college for interior design

    DH: Masters in information systems

FIL went to college, not sure if he got a degree or not.  MIL didn't go to college.  None of DH's 6 siblings went to college, and only 3 graduated high school.

  • both my parents, my dad has his masters and was working on his doctorate but stopped when the college started screwing around with his credits. I have a bach and my brother is currently taking a few classing working towards his degree.
  • Me:  Bachelor's in Poli sci. I wish I used it :(

Mom:  She did a year or two at a 4 year university but ended up with her Associates (or whatever) in Phlebotomy from a tech school.  She used it until we moved to NE when I was 8.  Now she works for a financial planner.

Dad:  Bachelor's in history, many certifications in computer stuff.  He went to school for history b/c he liked it.  When he was a junior they asked him where he wanted to student teach....he hadnt' realized that path led to being a teacher apparently.  He switched directions and went back to school after graduation.

DH:  Completed 2 years of college.  He's unsure what he wants to go back for and I totally understand...I wouldnt' know what to pick either.

FIL:  Some college.  I'm 95% sure he didn't graduate but I know he attended for awhile as that's where he met MIL.

MIL:  Bachelor's degree.  She's worked for the university library in Fargo for over 30 years.  I know her degree has something to do with that.

SIL:  Bachelor's in Fashion Design.  She works for an electronics wholesaler.

  • I have a bachelor's.

My mom  never went to college; my dad went for 1 semester.

My brother got his GED, and has dabbled in courses over the years, slowly/maybe working toward a bachelor's degree.  He's in management at McDonald's (he's been working there almost 10 years).

  • My mom has a BS in business (obtained later in life), and my dad got a BS in poli sci and a BS in journalism at UNL out of high school. My sister and I both have master's degrees. (MBA for me and Master's of education for her.) Both of DH's parents have 4 year degrees, as does his sister. College will definitely be expected of my kids. I've also got to say that I am shocked about the number of people with family who didn't finish high school.

  • My Dad graduated from college & dental school. My Mom graduated from nursing school (technically did not graduate from college - back then most schools did not give them a BSN, just a nursing "diploma," I guess. She's an RN).

I graduated from college & medical school.

My only brother didn't graduate from college after going for 3 yrs, he just could not decide what he wanted to do.  Now he's an Army medic. He joined at least in part b/c he could finish his BS on their dime, though he is enjoying his Army work so much I think he'll stick with it for at least a few years.

  • My dad has a BS in finance and is a CPA and my mom has a 2year degree.

My brother has his JD and sister is currently in pharm. school and I have my MA.

DH is the only one in his family with a BA degree-

  • Neither of my parents went. Two of my brothers didn't go at all, and one went on a full ride golf scholarship but basically failed his first year, and then eventually dropped out.

ETA: I have my Bachelor's in Human Service Administration. My DH has an Associate's in Architectural-Engineering Technology.

  • Both my parents are college grads.

Of my siblings, I am the only one with a 4 year degree. My sister went to interior design school. For some reason where my siblings grew up ( we grew up in different households as they are my half siblings) it doesn't seem like go to college was really the norm...

Tied the knot: 6.19.04 Mommy to 3 awesome kids: Maren 3/06, Tommy 12/07 amd Kolbe 8/09
  • My Mom and Dad both did.  My Dad has a PhD.  My step mom (valid since she's been my step mom since almost birth) is/was a lawyer so however much schooling you need for that (yes I'm clueless).  I have a BA in Psychology, which I fully intended to use, until computers and the internet came out (I am that old) and I was hooked so I have a few certificates to do that kind of stuff.  My step sister just finished her masters.  One of my sisters and one of my brothers did the 9 yr college route and eventually graduated.  My other 2 sibs didn't even attempt college, even though it would have been paid for.

Hubs has a degree, as does his brother, but neither of his parents do.  His parents did not help with college, he had a football scholarship.

College is non-negotiable over here in the loosest sense.   If they're totally unsure, which most 17/18 yr olds are, they're heading off to college, somewhere.  If they have aspirations that don't involve college, I will be behind them as long as they're working toward that aspiration.  Please don't make me think about this now, my baby heads off to kindergarten in the fall.  I'm a wreck already!

  • Me: Bachelor's

Husband: Master's will be completed this spring

    Mom: Associate's

Dad: Bachelor's, and will probably go for his Master's

Brother: Started for a Bachelor's, but dropped out when he was a sophomore.

    Not sure about husband's parents.

  • My parents graduated later in life and my dad went on to get his Master's in criminal justice.  They were married young and did not have the means to pay for it then, so they did it when we were young.

My brother also has a bachelor's degree.

  • My dad had a few hours towards his PhD.  My mom did not go to college.  My brother has his masters and I just have my bachelors.  With the exception of 1 other cousin, my brother and I are the only grandchildren who went to college and graduated.
  • Both of my parents.  And my dad went to law school, and my mother went to grad school.  My sister also graduated from college.

  • No college for my parents. My mom worked in workers comp, and my dad was a sheriff.

My mil got her nursing "diploma", fil is in hvac sales.

Dh has a fire science degree, and I have my paramedic specialist associates.

My brothers got a GED. They worked their way up the ranks of a car dealership, now they run a few, and make well well well into 6 figures. Not bad for drop outs! They are good at what they do.

My sis and sil- nope. Sil is a massage therapist.

    Retty blue collar fily

  • I am the first one to go to college...one brother has finished college since I graduated (he is 6 years older than me).  Both of my parents did not.  My mom had my oldest brother when she was 17 and paid for her husband to go to law school while she worked...(he left her afterwards, sweet guy).  My dad went through 8th grade and dropped out....My other two brothers got through high school...barely I believe.  The whole situation is funny to me, given that I ended up completing an undergrad, a fulbright, and most of grad school--that was the motivation behind getting where I did education-wise.

  • Dad: Bachelors degree, graduated when i was about 4 y/o.

Mom: took some college courses through her adult life until she died, didn't graduate.

Sibs and me: all graduated, BS degrees

DH and his siblings all bachelors from an out of state school.

  • Me: bachelors degree, starting masters this summer

Husband: gets his masters in May

    Mom: bachelors

Dad: bachelors and several extra endorsements

FIL: computer science bachelors, and then some more in fiance or something - he works on the Chicago Grain Exchange and does farm management

MIL: cosmetology (degree, certificate, not sure what exactly - but she did that on top of being a farm wife which does all the farm stuff on top of all of the family stuff. busy woman. love her)

My older brother: associates degree in lab technology. He's taken tons of spanish courses but I think he's just too scared to go back to school to get his bachelors degree. I think he'd do well but just won't do it.

My younger brother went to, what I would describe as a "trade school." He's a sound engineer. It was an 18 month or 2 year program. Comparable price tag to my other brother's associate's degree.

Schooling of some sort beyond high school is absolutely expected of my children. Military falls under that category. It was always assumed that we would all go to college. Guess I'm the only one who really assumed that though.

  • My dad has a bach., mom just graduated HS.

Out of six siblings, so far I'm the only one with a degree.  I started my MBA but can't find much time between the kids and working, so it might wait until the kids are in school.

The two youngest siblings are 19 and 21, and they're both in college and likely to graduate.  Another sister is talking about going back to school.
