I would pick a canal home on Tiki Island or Bayou Vista... with no living space downstairs that I'd have to worry about if a hurricane came through. Bonus: You get to skip the island traffic (but close enough if you wanted to visit/participate in anything going on, which is a lot and it's growing all the time).

you don't really get to skip the "island traffic" if you're driving there from downtown houston.  we live off bay area, and on weekends in the summer, 45 is a mess heading to the island (esp. on friday afternoons and saturday mornings) right there between BW8 and 518.

but yes, tiki island!  i love tiki island.

You're right, Jax, you still have to deal with BW8-518 traffic. But you won't have to deal with the causeway when there are accidents, or 61st street (and the 61st street exit) in the summers, which is a nightmare!

If you got something on the west end though it's a fairly traffic free easy drive down 288 ;-)

If you want to avoid the Galveston traffic and drive 288 instead, look in Surfside or Quintana, not the west end of the island.  That's a long drive down Bluewater Hwy to get to San Luis Pass.   Most of the houses in Surfside are beach houses though and don't have boat docks, there are also very few swimming pools.

My big boy is bounding towards 3! Hoping to add a sibling. image Hipster dog is not impressed.
  • I vote lake. The saltwater maintenance and boat slip maintenance is more than freshwater. Also, I dont know when the last time you have been to the lake was but, it has come up quite a bit especially on the north side (bentwater)

  • I prefer the open water and watching sailboats. I don't care for the noise of motor boats, and that seems to be what is the norm on the lakes.

Seabrook Sailing Club is a really fun group, and they race 470s which are fun boats. I really would like to be near that and get the kids sailing. (Any of the clubs down there would be great.)

Somewhere on the bay over the lakes for me.
