Long time, no see. With a ? about DES/proin (incontinence)
I know it has been a while since I have posted on this board. I see a lot of new SNs! WOW.
Sooooo, anyway for those of you who don't know me. I have been on thenest since 2004/2005 (early). I have 1 cat and 3 dogs Ages range from 8ish to 14ish.
I used to post on this board obsessively and now I don't, buuuuut anyway I have a question about the 14 yo dog. She is an Aussie Shep. She is incontinent and has been on proin, but still having accidents, so the vet wants to try DES. Have any used it before?
If that doesn't work, he wants to put her on a DES/proin combo. Any experience with at that combo?
She also has kidney issues which is causing her to drink more frequently.

They see us rollin'...they be hatin'.
Re: Long time, no see. With a ? about DES/proin (incontinence)
Hey! Nice to see a familiar face. I'm not around much either, but I just happened to be around today.
We have had Dixie on proin for about a year now, and it has helped us a lot. We didn't end up needing the DES, but when we were trying to solve Dixie's issues, I remember talking to someone from our breed rescue, and she said the DES was helpful for her dog and a few of her past fosters who weren't helped by proin alone. I think someone on here (wagmore, maybe) had used the DES as well.
The only other advice I can offer is that it took us a good couple months to see results from the proin and we had to up her dosage at least once to get things fixed. She was taking two of the 25 mg pills per day for a long time before we were able to back the dosage down to one a day. We tried taking her off it completely and the incontinence came back, so I'm thinking she'll be on one pill a day for the rest of her life. If you're new to the proin maybe give it a 'lil more time or a dosage increase? If not, then I would definitely be open to the DES.
In the meantime, you might watch for what triggers her to have an accident. Dixie's usually happened when she was really excited or really relaxed. So, we would take her out before anything exciting (like dinner or someone coming home) and before bed.
HTH! Good luck!

LOL!
Yup, I've been pretty much MIA from TN and TB lately, but I'd like to get back on more often. Between work and chasing the little one around the house (not to mention the holidays!), life has been kicking my butt lately, LOL!
How's everything going with you?

My dog was put on proin 4 years ago. It worked great, but over the years the dosage had to be slowly increased from 25 mg a day to 100 mg a day. Recently the proin is no longer working for my dog and she began getting UTIs. The vet has prescribed her DES. She started the dosage a month ago. Her current dosage is a combination of 1 mg of DES every 5 days with 25 mg per day of the proin. The combo seems to be helping. Her blood is being monitored every two weeks for the next couple months to make certain that she does not become anemic, as DES can cause bone marrow suppression is some dogs. I am not sure what your dog's kidney issues are, but I have put mine on a mixture of homemade low phosphorus food and half kibble. It has helped her BUN levels and decreased her thirst.
