S/O worst place you've been to
what's the worst (most crime, ugliest, most boring, most dangerous (such as a war zone) however you define it) place you've ever traveled to?
For me it's a tie b/w Bogota & Caracas. Caracas was such a dump!

"What is a week-end?"
i remember going to some place on the border of GA & NC in the mountains as a teen & being bored out of my mind. Essentially all there was to do was, as my mom put it, "drive around & see what you see." I don't think there was TV either. Hated it. Vacations were pretty rare growing up & it was a real bummer to go some place lame.
It's probably snotty of me, but travelling to "gritty" places isn't my deal. If I'm spending money to go somewhere, I want it to be pretty.
but, but, but...their chicken is so good!! (cuz Outback Steakhouse has REAL Australian food!!)
Mine is Mobile, AL...that place can suck it. I was stuck there for a conference for 4 days and every restaurant near our hotel closed at like 7pm. And the restaurant at our hotel was awful and I never got more than about 3 minutes of hot water during my shower each day. I hated everything about being there.
I forgot to answer....
Jamaica if you leave the grounds of a resort and many other caribbean islands the same thing...the resorts are beautiful and safe but leave the grounds and its GHETTO!!!
good to know! We did exactly this but did consider A.S.
doggylovr, I am so sorry!!!
Maybe you can ask what's the one place you'd most like to visit or a place others love but you have no desire to visit? Or something travel-related you really want to do but your DH has no desire to do. I am really sorry I stole your Q
yo - can we ask again about birthdays? bc I think everyone's b'day should be celebrated and folks seem to be hiding notification of their days in other posts. so we should have a "calendar" of birthdays and let everyone here have their own day on TN to be the center of attention!
(yes, I'm a Leo.)
"What is a week-end?"
I always have an awful time in Los angeles.
Worst places: Americus, Georgia after a tornado. Hell hole. Houston, Texas in July. Hot, smelly and miserable.
Parts of Lima and Peru in general scared me.
And, Disney is hive inducing.
word.
I will cut whoever first tells my son of the existence of Disneyworld. It's hot and overly crowded. People walk around eating giant turkey legs while it's all hot and crowded. These are my lasting memories of the land of the mouse. **shudder**
Stand up for something you believe in.
i think the most economically depressed place i've been is brazil. i didn't encounter any issues but it was definitely hard/sad to see the favelas from downtown rio. it's also a place that i would not have wanted to go if traveling solo. not that anyone shouldn't, just that i was definitely more comfortable being there with DH.
I actually really like Bogota, but I was in one of the nicer parts. Caracas is a pit.
Worse, though is Nigeria. I have been all over that country (for work), and the only place that was not dumpy was the capital (Abuja). I went up north (Kano, Kaduna) and down to the south (Lagos, Port Harcourt), and they were terrible. It was really eye-opening, though, to see what poverty like that really looks like.
I was not impressed at all with St. Thomas. we went there to SIL's wedding so not really "by choice" and it was just not our style. we also went on a cruise with DH's family and it was a disaster trip. there is really no reason to go to Nassau.
I'm surprised by all of the South America mentions (except for perhaps Caracas, which I haven't visited).
As far as overseas travel goes, I would have to say that I probably felt the most intimidated in Morocco. I can't quite put my finger on it, but I just did not feel particularly comfortable there as a female traveler. I am sure the language barrier didn't help either.
As for domestic places, the Kensington neighborhood of Philly is probably one of the sketchiest places I've been.

Magnetigorsk, Russia
I have traveled pretty extensively in Russia and really love a lot of places there (stark Soviet architecture aside), but this is Magnetigorsk is the most foul place I have EVER been. The factories which ring the city create a purple cloud of toxic haze, no exaggeration. We just made a short stop there, but the whole time I was literally afraid to breathe.
I hope no one here is from Albuquerque because, man, that place is an armpit. It was made worse by the fact that no one I encountered was even remotely friendly or helpful.
But really, parts of SW and PG county are worse than any place I've visited so I don't feel like I have much room to talk.
I know lots of people love St. Lucia, but we hated it. We rented a car and drove around the island and got lost is some pretty horrible neighborhoods where the people were extremely unfriendly. We were actually scared for a little bit.
Probably El Salvador for me, but only because I was there for a Habitat for Humanity build, so we were working in an extremely depressed area. But even in the capital, there were miles upon miles of slums that were basically cardboard houses with corrugated plastic roofs. Extremely sad and depressing.
In the US, I hate Indianapolis. I had to travel there a bit for work, and my coworker and I hated it. We always seemed to be unable to find anywhere to eat that wasn't a big national chain.
I've also spent a bit of time in Belfast, which is one of my favorite cities, but people generally freak out when I tell them I've been there, because of The Troubles. It's perfectly safe now, and has been for years, but people just remember all the bombing and fighting that went on for so long. I stayed in the hotel known as the most bombed hotel in Europe/the world, since it was bombed 28 times during The Troubles.
Totally true even though I love Montmartre. I almost got pickpocketed in the subway, but I had all my valuables in my body belt and caught the guy trying to get into my bag. I proceeded to yell at him in French and English and call him "voleur." Then his friend tried to steal my umbrella while I was yelling at him. WTF!
They got nothing except a very angry American yelling at them.
But to answer the question, we visited a family friend in north Arkansas and were bored out of minds. Not a place I'm too inspired to go back to.
