we are hosting an 80th b-day party for FIL on Sunday
I thought, because its Sunday and FIL is British - that we'd do a traditional British Sunday Roast
So roast meat (lamb or beef - still undecided), roast veggies, mushy peas, yorkshire puddings, and twice baked potatoes (thought it'd be fun to throw in an 'american' side that's yummy rather than plain baked potatoes)
SIL is bringing dessert - cake & fruit & whipped cream
BUT - what do we serve for appetizers?? we are eating inside - as it'll be HOT by then, but we need some snack foods that'll be easy to hold on plates in hand while people chat before lunch starts (probably outside). I thought maybe a spinach dip bread bowl - but now i'm thinking that really doesn't suit hot weather..... hmmm
any ideas???
TIA
Re: Food post - what appetizers to serve?? I'm stuck!!
a carved watermelon fruit basket with melon balls (or whatever those things are called).
For such a heavy meal, do you really need proper starters? We just went for a traditional Sunday lunch at a friends and they just had some little bowls of olives and nuts and chips out before dinner. You don't want to fill up before the feast!
Chips and salsa and guacamole?

Something I make for casual appetizers is:
slice of ham
cream cheese
quartered picke
Spread cream cheese thinly onto ham, put pickle on one end, roll up, stick toothpicks along it about 1" apart, cut into slices.
Really easy and they usually go over really well. Blot the pickle on a paper towel before rolling it, though, or the juice makes everything a little sloppy. And since they've got toothpicks in them, they're very easy to pick up and eat.
I sometimes will also make grape/cheese spears and alternate ham/pickle and grape/cheese on a tray or plate.
You could do a ploughman's lunch type platter...

That sounds really yummy :-)
