Tofu and UK ladies... re visa
Hi everyone! So I have to renew my Tier 1 visa in March. I can send it in up to a month before the expiry right? Has one done one recently? I want to book a trip for the end of March but am worried I won't get it back in time. Any idea what the wait times are like? Can I pay more to expedite?
Re: Tofu and UK ladies... re visa
That is a bummer you have to pay to renew it but exciting you are moving back! Are you still thinking Boston?
I'm not sure I understand your first question - you can send it in right up to the date the it actually expires. If you are applying early, you can send it in I believe up to 3 months before it expires. Any longer and you'll have to give an explanation as to why.
Note though, that it's sometimes wiser to wait until closer to the expiry date so that when a decision is made on your application your visa has already expired, so that you can trigger a right of appeal. If your visa is refused but your previous visa is still valid, even for a day, you have no right of appeal agains the refusal. (but you can make -and pay for- another application)
You can also pay extra to do a one-day service appointment and get it in the same day.
Standard wait times for a Tier 1 General extension right now vary betwen 3-8 weeks.

My first question was regarding how early I could send it in - for some reason I thought it had to be within a calendar date from when it expires... which is 26 March - but I can send it in now?
I'm finding it really difficult to find any info on tier 1 extensions on UKBA - I almost forgot how difficult they like to make it! Tofu do you happen to have a link?
Thanks for the info!
FRLCB - yep, Boston!! I'm really excited.. just wish I could make the move sooner!
I'm not sure yet! I want to live near Davis/Cambridge and have friends at the moment that I'll probably stay with for the first month or so in Arlington.
But I guess it will depend on where I get a job! I'm on a ridic 3 months notice period here though so I'm going to have move out there without having anything lined up - a bit scary!
It's difficult to find because Tier 1 General has been closed as a route. It's a very straightforward application, the only concern is that you need to show that you have been earning a certain amount of money each year, etc.
Technically, you can apply as early as you would like. However, if you are applying more than 1 month in advance I would advise that you send a letter with your application, explaining that you are applying for an extension earlier than usual due to upcoming travel plans, etc. and give those travel plans and dates.

Within that link is also the PBS calculator to see how many points you would score on your application.

Im a teacher and I moved back here in June 2010 with no job lined up. We stayed with my parents while I looked (DH had no work visa yet) and I got a job the last week of August. It took us til the end of September to find a suitable apartment near my job so I was commuting from Framingham to the north shore for like a month. It sucked but it all worked out!
