Rimadyl

Does anyone have any experience with the arthritis medication? My 6 year old lab has recently started having a severe limp. The vet thinks it is arthritis, but my lab is going in for an x-ray to rule out an injury this Friday. The vet prescribed Rimadyl but wants to do blood work because of the small risk of kidney and liver failure associated with the drug. I talked to the vet and thought that another medication would be better if the potential side-effects were less severe. However, the vet strongly urged Rimadyl and thought it was the best med if we were cautious with it's use (regular blood tests, etc). I know this board does a lot of research, so I thought it might be a good place to get some information. Thanks! Oh, and Rimadyl has been working to alleviate her pain...

Re: Rimadyl

  • We use it for Baxter - my vet also wanted liver and kidney follow-ups.  Pretty standard.  We haven't had any issues - Baxter is almost 9.

  • There is recent study that concluded that the homeopathic Zeel is as effective as rimdyl after 30 days of use.

You start Zeel while the dog is on rimidyl.  After 2-3 weeks, taper off the rimidayl.  By week four the dog should be getting all Zeel, no rimadyl.  You can evaluate at that point if the Zeel is enough for pain mngement---there are no side effects from it, either.

Also, look into Adanced Joint Heath from www.springtimeinc.com.  Good stuff!
