Should I NOT get my 10 y.o. lab the Bordetella shot?

Now that she is getting older, we don't generally board her as much as we used to, and I prefer to have MIL & FIL watch her if we go out of town. She is due for her 6 month Bordetella vaccination, but I started poking around on the internet and found this article:

http://www.dogsnaturallymagazine.com/bordatella-vaccination-dogs/

Is it unnecessary to get her vaccinated for this if we do not plan on boarding her? Last spring, she had a bad reaction to her DA2PP shot (vomiting & upset/gurgly stomach) and I had to take her back to the vet the next morning where the vet loaded her up with 4 different drugs (metronidazole, famotidine injection, diphenhydramine injection and dexamethasone) to combat the reaction. So I am gun shy on vaccinations and injecting her with chemicals as she's getting older, and when she's fine to begin with. Thoughts?

Re: Should I NOT get my 10 y.o. lab the Bordetella shot?

  • Neither of my dogs get the bordatella shot. They don't get boarded when we go away, and our groomer doesn't require it.
  • I never vax mine against bordetella. The less chemicals that are injected into my pets, the better.

  • Yeah, I wouldn't worry about it unless you board her.

  • I don't give Bordetella at all, nor do I give any unnecessary vaccinations. My dog will get titers every 3 years, which is also when he gets his rabies shot.

  • Our dog gets Bordatella once a year, but it is her only yearly vaccination.  She is boarded semi-regularly, and usually without a great deal of warning, so I have to keep her "ready".

If you won't be boarding her and your groomer doesn't require it, I wouldn't be too concerned about keeping it up.

  • Our boarding/daycare facility requires it every six months, so that's what our lab gets. If we didn't board him, we wouldn't get it.
  • I do vaccinate against bordetella however ask for the intranasal version. The intranasal vaccine has shown to be more effective and last much longer (like 18 months instead of the 6ish for the injectable.)
  • I do not give bordetella at all, we go to two training clubs and neither requires it.

  • My dogs are only intermittently in daycare (they were in a LOT early last year), and all of the daycare facilities that we use only require once a year, so I was going to skip it this year. But of course, city is doing some property inspection mid day on a week day in a few weeks, so alas, they will need to go back to daycare for the day and needed the shot.
