Our back door has this problem where it doesn't always latch properly and the wind can blow it open. We keep it bolted when we're home and when we're gone, but if we're just leaving for a few minutes we make sure to tug on it well to make sure it actually closes.
Last night I was eating dinner at my computer desk (hubby was working on the car and I didn't feel like eating alone at the dinner table) and Sherlock was running around like a maniac. I heard something slam and I thought he had just bumped the chair, knocked something over, etc. I just yelled "oh bud, what did you do?" and took a few more bites of my food before getting up to see what happened.
I got out to the living room and realized there was a breeze, I looked into the kitchen and the back door was WIDE open and kitty was gone.
Luckily he had only made it a few steps onto the deck, and came right back in as soon as I called him, but I had a little panic attack. I had NO idea that that sound was the door flying open and slamming against the fridge. If I had, obviously I would have gone over sooner to check.
Thank goodness it was cold and raining or he might have actually liked the idea of being outside and I might not have gotten there quickly enough.
Yikes!
From now on we are definitely dead-bolting the door at all times.
Re: I had a minor heart attack last night...
I'm really glad he didn't take off on you.

Phew! So glad he didn't bolt!
Side note: I'm really glad to hear he was running around like a nutso! That must mean he's feeling a bit better, right?

Haha it seems that way! The biting has gone away too, he's back to being a crazy kid who likes to cuddle from time to time
I almost miss when he was sedated (not really). I didn't have to fight him off the kitchen counter when I was making his food. This morning I had to get him off the counter at least 10 times during the 2 minutes it took me to mix his medicine and water into his wet food. Goofball!
I'm glad he's back to being himself though

Must mean he likes you - he didn't run off!
So glad to hear he's back to normal! It sounds to me like he and our cat (Rosco) are two peas in a pod. Took us forever to get his to stay off the dining room table and counters!
We had a similar scare a few months ago. We left the door to the garage open while we were doing something and Kitty snuck out (they NEVER sneak out so we are not careful about this). I didn't notice and later shut the garage door to the outside for the night.
I was doing something in the kitchen 30 min. or so later, looked up, and saw my indoor cat peering in at me from the back deck! My heart stopped! I seriously thought it was a ghost or a mirage or something for a minute. My brain couldn't comprehend that my cat was outside!
Boy was he happy to come in! I am so thankful he found his way to the back of the house and I saw him. Now with two kittens, I"m going to have to be much more careful!
