Has anyone had issues with this? I looked under settings and checked the box that says "hide from search engines" back when I got the account, months and months ago. Yet, I'm still seeing it on a Google search. I just emailed their tech support a little while ago. Some of the things I have pinned aren't "bad" but not necessarily something I need the entire world to see, you know? I guess if it's not fixed, I'll be deleting some things and being a lot more careful how I use Pinterest.
I wish they'd let you have private boards too, or be able to pick if only your friends get to see what you pin or everyone...
Re: Privacy on Pinterest
I agree with Passanie. If you want to remember a weblink privately, use the bookmark function on your web browser, ya know?
Hmmm....totally understand why we might want to keep it private. Sometimes I pin funny pictures or whatever that aren't exactly politically correct, and I guess it's not great for everyone to see that.
I went into settings and changed it so that my name appears as Patty H. instead of my last name, but it still comes up in a search engine. I'm interested to know what you find out!
In general though, the link that is coming up in the search engine is just the profile page. When you click it, it does an overview of all your boards. They would probably have to dig around quite a bit to find anything besides food and crafts on mine. I mean, I have over 1200 pins...which reminds me, maybe I should go make something...
Yes, the point is to share things, but why can't I have a little more control over how much of it I share, and with who? Why not have the option of only sharing with people I approve as followers, like you approve friends on FB?
And I don't think it would be strange to be able to keep some boards private. What if you want a board that's all gift ideas, but you have friends or family members that follow you on Pinterest and you don't want them to see what you're buying for them? What if you're looking for a job (as I am) and don't want potential employers seeing the silly quote I pinned that uses the F-word? I think there are reasons to have things private but maybe that's just me.
I haven't heard from tech support today so I'm going over there to clean house... My stuff will have to stay PG only on there now.
Yeah, I'm totally with you on the bolded. I think it would be great if we were given the option to decide what to share publicly and what to pin for personal use. I use pinterest to plan parties and gift ideas, and I really wish I could keep some of those things a surprise. And using the bookmarks or favorites tools on my computer is just not the same as having a nice, organized board. I hope you get some answers soon S!
I haven't heard anything back, still, from Pinterest. I think I've finally been removed from the search results, but I'm still playing it safe. I changed my username to something obscure, took down the profile pic showing me and DH, and deleting any pins I wouldn't want an employer to stumble upon. So, I've bore-ified my account, but I really didn't see a way around it.
