Would you call the ped?

I know, I know.  If I am asking I should already know the answer.  I just hate to take the time off work and haul dd there and waste the copay if I am just overreacting.

DD has had a cough for several weeks now.  She feels fine otherwise (as far as I can tell), she plays and eats and sleeps normally, no fever.  She just will start coughing every few minutes and it doesn't sound very good.  I can hear the mucous in there and (gross, sorry) she sometimes ends up with a mouthful.

It seems I was told by a nurse last year though that it isn't a concern unless she is having problems breathing or is obviously uncomfortable.  Which isn't the case, she runs off and bounces around right afterwards.

WWND?

Re: Would you call the ped?

  • Eh, I'd probably take her in.  But my kids are also prone to bacterial infections with no other outward signs like fever or behavior change.

  • I'd call because it's been a few weeks.  I'm a wait and see type of mom, but since it's not going away, I'd get her checked out.  Could it be allergies?

  • I would take her in as well. How does her nose look? Is it only in her chest or is her nose stuffy and icky too?

I guess it could be allergies, really I don't know :(

Her nose is fine, not red or running.  She has been sneezing quite a bit though.

I guess I should just take her.  Better safe than sorry.

  • I'm with pesky, but my kiddo also runs to infections quickly.

My pedi told me that his rule of thumb was that if a kid is coughing and really congested for more than 7-10 days straight, they want to see them, even if they've had no fever, because they want to check for infection, etc.

  • I would call to talk to one of the nurses and then decide.
  • DD tends to have lingering coughs for a few weeks after a cold, but it doesn't turn into anything so I don't usually take her in if she is acting fine. I just try to elevate her head at night and definitely run a humidifier when we're home.
  • COughs can take a good 3-4 weeks to completely go away.  If she's otherwise acting fine and isn't having trouble breathing, I wouldn't take her in.
