Dying your hair questions...

I never thought I'd do it, but eh, what the hell.

I'm thinking blonde. As I've never done it, what is your most important piece of advice you think I should know.

You can even say "Don't do it." I need to know.

Re: Dying your hair questions...

  • Going lighter means bleaching your hair, not just coloring it, so it damages it more.  If you're set on going lighter, have it professionally done.  They'll know how to curb some of the damage.

  • How dark are you now? If it is really dark, you are probably going to have to bleach it first, for the color to actually take affect. (Which is a PITA, in my opinion.)

If you are already pretty light, I would say go for it, it a lot of fun. Just remember to not leave it on there too long if you do it yourself.

  • It's very dark, and I didn't consider the bleaching part.

If I go through with it, it will be professionally done.

  • I have never worked up the courage to do it myself, but I have friends who do it themselves with relative ease.

I've actually only dyed my hair a few times but have always gone to the salon.  I need someone to blame if it looks messed up.  Wink

Don't forget about the maintenance, it's an expensive thing to keep up with.

If you really want to do it, don't let us stop you. :)

  • For that big a change I'd def do a professional job.

I do and I don't. Stick out tongue I just need to know what it entails. Maintenance is something to consider, I'll probably need my roots done every 4 weeks or so.

  • I so go for it!

My hair is pretty dark and I do a heavy foil, hi-lights and low-lites.  I need to get it done about every 6 weeks.  The reason I like foils is because I can change my shades whenever I want.  If I'm feeling like looking blonder I do more hi's, less low's or I switch it if I wanna look a little darker.

Definitely go professional though.   I'm pretty picky when it comes to color lines a salon uses to.  Some are just known for a better blond.  Some to avoid for going blonde are Redken and Matrix.

  • Since your hair is dark and you want to go lighter, I agree with everyone else who said to get it professionally done.  Going lighter (whether through foils or full on color) will involve stripping your hair of its natural and could cause damage.

My natural color is an ash blond (although I think it's getting darker and more brown the older I get), but I've been dying my hair a deep brownish red and adding streaks of a brighter red (almost looks purple-ish when it's first done before I go through a few shampoos).  My hair is very thin and fine so I'm finding that the deep/richer colors are easier on my hair (since I'm not stripping it of color) and adds tons of volume and fullness.  I get touch-ups and trims every 6-8 weeks and my hair is fairly short.

Good luck and have fun with whatever you decide to do!

  • My advice? Definitely do highlights, not all over color. Maintenance will be slightly less of a hassle..

  • I agree with Lisa.

I would start out slow getting subtle highlights the first time.  If you decide you like it and want to go blonder then you can get more and brighter highlights the next time, working your way up.  And I'd definitely have a professional do it since you're going for a lighter color.
